A quick google search will show you that this is a very common problem since release, and probably why these dropped down in price and went on sale so quickly after release. Issue persists after firmware updates. If I had known, I'd have gone back and bought the airpods pro 2 instead , which is what I had before these.
I was at my local store and I was broswing around while I was there and its a YMMV but I found a cage in the store with select open box headphones and found a pair Excellent condition for $120.99 no original box. I snatched them up as well.
Like I stated it was in-store and YMMV. I stopped by my other local stores and they didn't have a "discount cage" some had open box behind glass and some had open box elsewhere around the store.
