Thanks, I'm in for one. I need a 2TB drive for a build right now for my son and originally bought the Predator on sale now for $278 but read about the infamous failure of the ig5236 controller and backed out. Then bought a WD Black SN7100 but this SN850X is (also) a TLC drive but this one has DRAM too! I'm headed to MC anyway for a 7800X3D combo pickup already.

Oh yeah u dodged a bullet cancelling the acer ssd, the sn7100 is a already very good high end gen4 ssd very efficient too soo if u already bought and already have it i would keep it, unless u move 100s of gigabytes of files you dont need dram.

The sn7100 is better than the sn850x other than sustained speeds because of the dram cache the sn850x has soo technically sn7100 is better lol

I don't understand your comment. The sn7100 doesn't have DRAM, and the sn850x does. Can you elaborate?

They just need to massively overprice PSUs and cases next, then everything will be massively overpriced.

To reply to my own question, AI says this about which drive to choose for gaming (for this in a similar position to me right now):

In that case, the SN7100 is still the better pick for gaming.
Here's why the price tie actually makes the decision easier:
- In the 3DMark gaming benchmark, the SN850X scores about 9.8% higher — but that's without Game Mode 2.0 enabled, so the gap is real but not dramatic in practice.
- The SN7100 comes with the latest DRAM-less controller (Polaris 3), which runs cooler and has better 4K random performance — and 4K random is what actually matters for game load times.
- Gaming performance is mostly unaffected by the lack of DRAM. Games don't hammer SSDs with the kind of deep, sustained queue workloads where DRAM makes a difference.
- The SN7100 rarely throttles, even without a heatsink, under typical gaming workloads — which means more consistent performance over long sessions.
The SN850X's main advantages (DRAM for sustained heavy writes, 8TB option) simply don't matter much for gaming. At the same price, the newer, cooler-running SN7100 is the smarter choice for your build.

The sn7100 has better components soo it has better preformance in most aspects, but the sn850x is better in long writes (because it has dram) soo like if you move alot of big files the sn850x would be better for you, dram isn't everything there is dramless ssds better than dram ssds.

For gaming literally any ssd is fine even a sata wouldn't be a big difference u just want any good ssd that isn't too slow or has a high failure rate, but the components of the sn7100 are just better (only caveat being it doesn't have dram which id why the sn850x is even in this conversation if both had dram the sn850x would be better and by alot) but at the end if you aren't moving alot of very big files daily just get an ssd that doesn't drop to hdd speeds and doesn't have a high failure rate and you will be fine, and also don't buy the brand buy the model, don't listen to someone that says crucial ssds are good or samsung ssds are good (Samsungs ssd are like 99% good yeah lol) like crucial have an ssd that can drop to <150mbs Soo hdd speeds (talking about the p3/p3 plus) and don't listen to YouTubers advice on ssds like ztt or whoever they really suck, ztt has suggested the ud90 multiple times, the ud90 is a bad ssd (configurations wise) and had a bad firmware.

Your AI covered most of it, I guess, but with a lot of filler, as usual. The Polaris 3 controller is much newer, and basically copies the Maxio controllers' algorithms which are faster even without DRAM. Also, some of the SN850X, depending on when they were manufacturered, could have 112 layer NAND, which also doesn't hold up well to the 218 layer ICs in the SN7100. Unless you're doing very larger file transfers often, the SN850X isn't the flagship it was at launch, 4 years ago.

I will NOT buy anymore ridiculously overpriced SSDs till these ugly scammers (the sellers) drop their horribly high prices to the levels they were before.
This is highway robbery......hope all you scammers get lost permanently.

Thanks, definitely not doing large transfers or anything. This is just gaming and some student productivity stuff. Thank you.

These crooked scammers are real robbers. I will never buy these over-priced SSDs till they come down to their previous levels.
These crooks can make pickles with these SSDs as they will be unable to sell them.

The entire US economy and government is crooked like a tenth world country. The level of corruption and bribery is more than all third world countries combined. Ideally the entire US government politicians should be charged with crimes against humanity and have worldwide arrest warrants issued and immediately shipped to Nuremberg for their trials
