Thanks, I'm in for one. I need a 2TB drive for a build right now for my son and originally bought the Predator on sale now for $278 but read about the infamous failure of the ig5236 controller and backed out. Then bought a WD Black SN7100 but this SN850X is (also) a TLC drive but this one has DRAM too! I'm headed to MC anyway for a 7800X3D combo pickup already.

Oh yeah u dodged a bullet cancelling the acer ssd, the sn7100 is a already very good high end gen4 ssd very efficient too soo if u already bought and already have it i would keep it, unless u move 100s of gigabytes of files you dont need dram.

The sn7100 is better than the sn850x other than sustained speeds because of the dram cache the sn850x has soo technically sn7100 is better lol

I don't understand your comment. The sn7100 doesn't have DRAM, and the sn850x does. Can you elaborate?

They just need to massively overprice PSUs and cases next, then everything will be massively overpriced.

To reply to my own question, AI says this about which drive to choose for gaming (for this in a similar position to me right now):

In that case, the SN7100 is still the better pick for gaming.
Here's why the price tie actually makes the decision easier:
- In the 3DMark gaming benchmark, the SN850X scores about 9.8% higher — but that's without Game Mode 2.0 enabled, so the gap is real but not dramatic in practice.
- The SN7100 comes with the latest DRAM-less controller (Polaris 3), which runs cooler and has better 4K random performance — and 4K random is what actually matters for game load times.
- Gaming performance is mostly unaffected by the lack of DRAM. Games don't hammer SSDs with the kind of deep, sustained queue workloads where DRAM makes a difference.
- The SN7100 rarely throttles, even without a heatsink, under typical gaming workloads — which means more consistent performance over long sessions.
The SN850X's main advantages (DRAM for sustained heavy writes, 8TB option) simply don't matter much for gaming. At the same price, the newer, cooler-running SN7100 is the smarter choice for your build.
