Ryobi's 18V brushless 8 inch pruning mini chainsaw stands out for fast, one handed branch cleanup, especially on small limbs, bushes, and larger fallen branches cut into manageable pieces. It is repeatedly described as much quicker and less tiring than a reciprocating saw, with less vibration and better control over where the branch falls. The 2.0 Ah battery mainly affects runtime, not cutting power, and the included battery and charger add value for those already in the Ryobi system. The main caution is maintenance, since the so called oilless design still needs manual chain oiling, and stock has been spotty in stores.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. It cuts small to medium branches much faster than a reciprocating saw, especially when making many cuts on large branches, small trees, or bushes. The one-handed design also makes it easier to control than a vibrating recip saw.
It is especially useful for pruning smaller branches and for repeated cuts on roughly 2"-5" diameter wood, with some users also using it on larger branches and small trees. It is less suited to roots or cutting right at ground level, where a reciprocating saw can be better.
Yes. The one-handed design is a major advantage for holding a branch in place while cutting short sections directly into a wheelbarrow or yard cart. That makes cleanup faster and easier than juggling a recip saw.
The 2.0Ah rating mainly affects runtime, not cutting performance. A larger Ryobi battery can give you more cuts per charge, but it will not make the saw cut better than the 2.0Ah battery.
Yes. The oilless design still requires manual chain oiling to keep the chain and bar from wearing quickly, and this model does not have a built-in oil reservoir. Some owners loosen the chain and pour oil around the bar before running it to distribute the oil.

Only thing I don't like is it doesn't have a reservoir for bar/chain oil. I typically loosen the chain and pour some around the bar and run it a few times to distribute it. They claim you don't need it but other small saws do have them?
The amp-hour rating has no bearing on how much power the battery can deliver, just how long it will last in delivering it. A bigger ryobi battery will do more cuts on one charge, but won't do those cuts any better than the 2 Ah.

Regarding the saw, I picked one up in Cypress ca. It says it has 3 in the clearence endcap, but there was none. An employee found one on the shelves above the regular lawn tools section for ryobi. Unsure if there were two more up there, there was only one where it was pulled
