What's the news?
Full quote of announcement in wiki
As of June 8th...
  • Pre-Orders for Batch 6 of Thor & Batch 7 of Odin 3 handheld game/emulation consoles are now closed. Now they're taking Pre-Orders for Batch 7 of Thor & Batch 8 of Odin 3. These will begin to ship sometime in August (Aliexpress indicates August 17th).
  • Prices will be increasing "Later this month" for both Thor & Odin 3 handheld game/emulation consoles. The price increase will take effect once the current "inventory allocation is sold". This could mean the price increase will affect the later pre-orders of Batches 7/8, or it may take place starting with Batch 8/9 pre-orders. It depends on when they decide to cut off the current batch.
How much will the Price Increase be?
They didn't say. Mad

But, we can look at their official price history and previous price increases to make some guesses. These prices are either from initial pre-orders or from the AYN's website [ayntec.com], not including later Aliexpress sales.
 8/21/20259/7/20259/9/20251/20/20263/8/20264/16/2026
Thor Base 8+128GB$299$299$299$309$319$319
Thor Pro 12+256GB$349$349$349$369$399$399
Thor Max 16+512GBN/AN/AN/AN/AN/A$469
Thor Max 16+1TB$429$429$429$449$489$549

Odin 3 Base 8+128GBN/A$299$329$329$339$339
Odin 3 Pro 12+256GBN/A$369$399$399$439$439
Odin 3 Max 16+512GBN/A$419$449$449$489$489
Odin 3 Ultra 24+1TBN/A$499$519$519N/AN/A

Based off the trends, if the unit you're looking to purchase has more RAM & Storage, then the price increase is going to be more dramatic. The AI Overlords spare no one their price increases.

If I want any of these, should I buy now before price increases or wait for a later sale?

The answer for at least Thor was to buy sometime around June 1st when Eragorn posted a thread for the sale on Aliexpress, with sale prices below retail even before coupon codes.

Now the prices on Aliexpress are back up, but there's still coupons. Your decision is going to come down to:

1.) Do you think there will be another sale on Aliexpress that will drop the prices more than they are now, even after one or more price increases? In a month? 2 months? 4 months?

2.) Given lead time for pre-orders can be one to two months, when do you want to have the device in your hands?

If you're going to buy now...

Here's tables with current coupons and after-coupon prices for each model, with a link to the product page above each table. These are sold at AYN's Official Aliexpress store; I'm getting ~$24 shipping and varying amounts of import/tax charges not included in the prices below. I imagine like usual the prices will shift slightly.

Edit: Codes are dead.

---
Hope that helps. At the very least if there is a sale in the future, we'll have a price record on what everything was going for on Aliexpress right now. Cheers.

@everyone

Hey everyone!

The 7th pre-order batch for Thor and 8th pre-order batch for Odin 3 are now live and available starting today!

We also wanted to give everyone an early heads-up that we're planning a price increase for both Thor and Odin 3 later this month. The new pricing will take effect once the current inventory allocation is sold through, so if you've been thinking about picking one up, now would be a great time to place your order.

A few quick notes:
✅ This new pre-order batch will continue to use UFS 3.1 storage.
📦 Orders from this batch are expected to begin shipping in August.

As always, thank you all for the amazing support and enthusiasm. We can't wait to get these devices into your hands! ✨

The Thor seems more versatile than Odin... Why is Odin more expensive?

The Odin 2 Portal is $250 on AYNs site if you don't need the latest hardware or don't want to wait on a back order!

Not sure if they're shipping faster now. But pretty sure it's still on a 4 to 6 months wait

Thor is a 3DS replacement, Odin is a Steam Deck alternative

The price difference kind of depends on the model, because you can see the 8+128GB and 16+512GB models for both are pretty close in price, but the 12+256GB has like a $20 difference.

Not sure why it's like that, but the Odin 3 has a more powerful chipset.Odin 3 has the Dragonwing Q8 while Thor has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The spec sheets for both of those CPUs from the manufacturer are attached to this post.

This is somewhat of an exaggeration. While yes you can play x86 on an 8 elite via GameNative/GameHub/Winlator, it's far from flawless, and configuration is always a thing. 8 elite custom drivers are still coming along though. So maybe one day. Especially if Valve releases steamOS on arm, o3 would be a great platform.

These are cool but you can get a modded OLED switch for about same price. Gives you the entire native switch library (including a TON of retro remasters and ports which will be 100% performant and upgraded). Also does solid emulation for PSX/below and recently added GameCube and Saturn emulation which isn't as great. Afiak 3ds isn't supported well but DS is and you can get a vertical clamp for joycons which makes it awesome for ds. There is also option to boot Linux / Android natively but from what I've read it's a little hacky.

TL;DR a modded oled switch is similar price and gives you basically an infinite library of games including a lot of retro stuff

The Thor is much more than a "3DS" replacement. You can use the lower screen for emulating older consoles and the top screen for 16:9 or 4:3. The Thor Lite is fine for console emulation of this sort.

The Thor Base (or above) has an S8G2 processor which is capable of running many PC games. However, the Odin 3 will have an advantage there.

Generally if people just want a 3DS emulator there are cheaper options.

I grabbed a Thor Lite for $249.00 and don't regret getting it over the more expensive chip versions (base-max). 3DS is very smooth at 3x resolution and the higher end system by the same manufacturer plays nicely on it in handheld mode for most of the games tried. Performance is on par with a Retroid pocket 5 or Flip 2, if you want to look for a video review/comparison online. Not many reviews for the Thor Lite out there, as far as I can see.

Thor Base also has the S8G2 processor; only the Lite has a different one.

Yeah I didn't include the Thor Lite in the comparison because it's not sold on Aliexpress and honestly the price difference is about ~$40 between buying Thor Lite direct from the manufacturer and getting the Thor Base model w/ better processor after coupon from the AYN's aliexpress store. I think the shipping direct from AYN is a bit dodgier too.
