Lenovo's ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 is a mobile workstation built for heavy creator and engineering work, with a 24GB RTX PRO 5000, 192GB of RAM, 4TB of storage, and workstation software certification. The huge memory pool, four SODIMM slots, and Thunderbolt support make it stand out for video editing, VFX, local AI, and other on the go pro workflows. The main tradeoffs are the very high price after tax, the pen sold separately, and some spec choices that feel dated for the money, including DDR5 5600, a 120Hz 3.2K screen, and only one PCIe 5.0 NVMe slot. It reads like a niche powerhouse for specialized mobile work.

  • Power users building a heavily expandable mobile workstation, because it has four SODIMM slots and multiple NVMe bays for large memory and storage configurations.

  • Mobile VFX and Unreal Engine artists who need workstation-class power, because the GPU, huge RAM pool, and ISV-certified software support fit demanding on-site production.

  • Local AI practitioners who want offline model work, because the machine can load large models into system RAM and keep prompts private without an internet connection.

  • Traveling film editors and colorists who need to finish 4K work away from a desk, because the hardware is described as strong enough for high-end editing and grading on the move.

  • AI buyers expecting the GPU alone to handle large models, because 24GB VRAM may only suit smaller models and the system RAM does not replace VRAM.

  • Shoppers wanting top-tier gaming-style performance per dollar, because the CPU, RAM speed, and integrated graphics are criticized as weaker than cheaper alternatives.

  • Creators who need a pen included for sketching or note-taking, because the pen is sold separately.

  • Buyers who want a simple, low-risk purchase without extra coverage, because the machine is framed as the kind of expensive workstation that benefits from extended warranty protection.

Crazy. I built my desktop with 256 GB EGG memory (ungradable to 512 GB) with options of 25 SSDs (I have only 8 with 3 HDDs) and 25 monitors (I have only ~10 monitors - wife's restriction! on 6 graphic cards) all together for less than 1k!

I have never seen a laptop this is expensive before. What makes it so pricey? Some of the specs look crazy.
Yeah I worked at a conpany that sold laptops long time ago people bought these, but they were usually like pixar etc very heavy on rendering for employees that needed portability.

The power bricks werr massive.

One too many comma in the price
There is only one comma, and if you remove it, it's still the same number ($8,999 vs $8999).

Sure! If you Like depreciating assets.... That even at $9K ( + tax) : -DDR5 is ONLY 5600mhz (rather than higher speed, 8000+ mhz)-ONLY has ONE 5.0 NVME slot-Screen is ONLY 120Hz & barely 3.2K (when my older X1 is 4K Touch) -ONLY has ICU 9 275HX cpu when the 300-Series are rolling out-ONLY has 24 Processors & same number of Threads *When AMD's offerings will blow it out of the water**And ONLY 8 cores are P=Performance ones... -And NO PEN is Included!! To name a few.... drawbacks. *A smart shopper would invest the 9K (or even just half) in some HY investments/stocks/etc.
Arrow lake is faster than panther lake 300 series is a more of a lunar lake upgrade

Also amd laptop offerings are pretty garbage.

Only options are their desktop zen chips which have awful idle power draw or the strix point stuff which is nice but just worse

Wonder what the use-case is, that's a lot of RAM for just 24GB VRAM if it is for AI.

How did they even pack 192GB of RAM . wow
It's got 4 SODIMM slots. If this thing goes on clearance for, say, $2000 - I'd be strongly tempted to buy it.

Anyone want to guess how much runtime it'll get with its 99WHr battery?

Ya but those people aren't shopping around for these on their personal dime, their companies already provide these caliber machines to them
I never cease to get a little chuckle every time someone says that nobody buys the kinds of machines I buy.

These are definitely niche products, but those of us working in those niches have uses for these seemingly wacky computers. I'm actually chilling in the woods with one of my monster laptops and a battery bank, enjoying the freedom from a desk in an office while running both local training and local inference on some serious AI/ML models.

Believe it or not, this isn't even the wackiest "mobile server" laptop in production today. Check out the water-cooled Tongfang designs, or the most expensive HIDEvolution models. Being able to load models with 30B+ parameters and offload MoE experts into the massive amount of system RAM means that I can have advanced AI/ML capabilities without paying for tokens from a subscription service, and without an Internet connection, plus total control over the models.
