The disclaimer is that this trilogy is Legends, which means it is non-canon. It won't fit in with movie and television stuff that came after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012.

That said, if you are going to read any Star Wars books and are ok with non-canon, this is the one series to read. This book is credited with reviving interest in Star Wars and the movie prequels probably wouldn't have happened had this book never been written. You're going to learn so much more about Grand Admiral Thrawn, who we now see in Rebels and Ahoka. Not all Star Wars books are created equally, but Timothy Zahn sets the bar.

Agree. OG trilogy and the 2 newer trilogies about Thrawn from Zahn are amazing and probably my favorite series of star wars books. They did Thrawn dirty in Rebels and Ahsoka. It's like the directors/writers hadn't even read what Thrawn was about or how he worked.

It's one of the best Star Wars series out there. Loved it more than Rebels and Ahsoka.

Agreed, also really liked Zahns concept of what the clone wars was (since that was only mentioned and never explained in the original trilogy). The idea of the clone wars being literally "we started using cloning tech to make soldiers... then realized they were all going criminally insane, but it was too late and so we just made a huge army of lunatics" seemed great as a way for Palpatine to take control.

Legends books like these are what should be cannon. This book series is 1000% better than anything Disney has put out. The Thrawn in this book trilogy is the true art compared to the Thrawn you see in Rebels and Ahsoka.

Completely agree. What struck me about the Heir to the Empire trilogy is how well-written all our favorite characters are: you can so easily 'hear' the dialogue of Luke, Leia, Han, etc. as if the actors are speaking the lines themselves. Seems like a seamless transition from the original trilogy movies. Very readable (although Zahn does go on a bit about the minutiae of space battles, I didn't mind too much, haha).

Also agree that the subsequent Thrawn trilogies, where Zahn goes into the culture and history of the Chiss, are incredible. Amazing first-class world-building (absolutely worthy of the Star Wars mantle) and character development. Highly recommend those too!

Fun book, but it means absolutely nothing to the Star Wars universe now.

Or like most people, you ignore the Disney crap and accept this far superior storytelling as canon...

These books, coupled with games like X-Wing/TIE Fighter and comics like Dark Empire (even if it has issues) were the core of the old EU. I personally prefer them to both the prequels and the sequels.

Thank you, trying to get into reading more rather than doom scrolling and this got me to get it!

If Disney had made a couple movies based on these books instead of dropping from cannon, I think they would have gotten a lot more people in the theaters. Fantastic stories and great characters.

Why should that ruin your enjoyment of a book? What does it matter if a work of fiction is part of the canon or not?
