For all the pros out there... I just bought this last week from the previous SD deal:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GY8S4PQ6
Wonder how this compares to this unit? Is this unit that much better? I paid $40 for the one above.

I don't understand what this does. Would this add CarPlay to an older vehicle (with touchscreen) that doesn't have it built in?
Adds wireless CarPlay Android auto to a wired head unit that has Android auto or CarPlay. Makes it wireless plus streaming

This is a crap price, $70 ... Plenty of devices out there that are under $30
Those are just wireless carplay. This has full android with streaming apps and mirror screen.

They look very similar but the one you have doesnt appear to have an HDMI in or extra USB port.

Heads up: This design is marketed under a number of different brands and they all have the same fatal flaw: They get EXTREMELY HOT.

We're talking hot enough to cause 1st degree burns. The thermals on it are so bad that the heat transfers through the cable. When this happens, the unit will throttle under the most minimal load, causing it to become unusable or even crash. If you're going to spend this much on an Android car box, get one that has a larger profile for better thermals.

Or, you can get an Ottocast TV Mate Max for $74.

This doesn't have Android OS built in. Instead, it mirrors your phone screen or anything you plug into the HDMI port.

The upside to this is the interface will be as fast as your phone can handle. The downside is Android Auto/Carplay is a secondary function unless you use something like Headunit Reloaded (Android only) to emulate Android Auto while mirroring your screen.

However, mirroring is the only way to have access to all of your apps on your car screen.
That's incorrect.
This is NOT just mirroriing your phone. It does have built in apps, and if you turn a hotspot on your phone, it will use those built in streaming apps and display on your head unit.

The Atoto brand doesn't work with many 2023+ cars, unfortunately.

On my '24 Toyota, the time on the unit wouldn't sync (there's no way to change it without plugging it into a head unit) and that's enough for Android Auto to reject it.

There are other models that have HDMI out, so you can connect it to a monitor and control it with a mouse to fix these issues.

Re-read my comment.

I know this device runs full Android OS.

That's why it needs such a powerful multicore processor that's prone to overheating.

If you actually read my comment, you would see I suggested the Ottocast TV Mate as an alternative because it DOESN'T run a full OS.
Sorry your post was about as clear as mud.
I read your post - you weren't clear what features you were referring to with what device. Sorry, re-read what you said and you'll understand why.

Used this for a little bit and found it extremely slow. Is that normal?

The 20-30 buck models would be slow, laggy, and more limited. This model is considered a lower-end model too but preforms decent. You get what you pay for. The 200-300 dollar models has more ram, better processor and more storage.

Try reading from top to bottom and left to right. It will help.
I agree with Travis B. You might think it's clear because you wrote it. To the rest of us, it's a bit confusing. I gave you the benefit of the doubt until you got passive aggressive.

This works pretty well for me. My car has wired AA/Carplay and this seamlessly makes it wireless. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FP2L3...in_title_3 I've seen other dongles that probably work as well for under $10.
I have a similar one from AliExpress that was about $4. It is much smaller and works much better than the one I got from Motorola for about $20.

I have reviewed a bunch of these as a vine reviewers on amazon, and most of the issue i see with these types of "smart box" is the misleading advertisement that you can "seamlessly" switch between carplay and the default android system - that is simply not true for most cases. There are only a few models that are capable of doing so, and they are usually sold as "Dual WiFi", not "dual band" - they are not the same. If you use the GPS navigation via Carplay (ie. google map) and want to "simultaneously" play Youtube or Netflix in the background while waiting for the red light, or whatever scenario you want to substitute, once you get out of the google map screen, you will have to manually reconnect the unit back to the hotspot in order to regain internet connection. This is extremely annoying for most of the user's case because let's admit it, no one is buying this system to sit in the car while waiting under the tree. You can surely use the mirrorlink function, but your phone is going to be HOTTT and it's bad for the battery in the long run.
There are only two options:
  1. Dual Wifi, so that the unit can connect to carplay AND hotspot without turning off one or the other
  2. Build-in GPS chip, which means you only need to hotspot for internet access and launch navigation directly from the unit instead of your phone via carplay
I am hoping that this unit falls into the (1), and it's definitely not (2) because it mentions that the Gemini AI has route planner feature but not routing, meaning there is no build-in GPS
It would be nice if someone can clarify if this device is option 1 or 2 for everyone's reference before jumping the gun
