Everybody in the country is sharing the same 22 channels. You can try to turn on privacy settings, but that's misleading because everybody who isn't setting the settings can still hear you - you just won't hear them most of the time. Sometimes people have repeaters running, and those can and likely will have stronger signal and greater range than your little hand unit.

Radio is handy, but keep in mind that they're not magic cell phones that are private direct communication between you and a buddy. you gotta learn about the tool to use it right, and once you learn it, these radios aren't gonna be enough for you.

This is true, but the GMRS license costs $35 for ten years and it's good for everyone in your immediate family.
Enforcement is nonexistent so don't let the license scare you away from GMRS.

You do not! And like Aegrotio said in this thread, I got my numbers mixed up. It's $35 for a 10 year license. Will you get busted if you don't get one? Likely not. But it's fun to tell people that you have an FCC call sign.

Interesting. I had a Baofeng and am replacing it with a Wouxon. So we no longer need to pass a test for private use..

Not for the GMRS channels. I use my TIDRadio H8 for NASCAR races which also has HAM channels so I can listen to the drivers. I don't have a HAM license so as long as I don't broadcast on any HAM channels then I'm golden. Your Baofeng and Wouxon are most likely GMRS and HAM. Same thing applies for you. Speaking legally, a $35 10 year GMRS license (no test) is all you need to broadcast on the GMRS channels. You can get a HAM license to broadcast on the HAM channels and that test costs differently depending on where you take the test. Hamstudy.org is a good resource.

You can listen to all channels, GMRS or HAM without any license, of course.

Ahh, HAM license vs GMRS vs FRS. I confused the HAM license with GMRS/FRS. So test is still required for HAM broadcasting.

I remember the "good Old days", before smartphones, and yeah I become a ham , got the lic ect. It was fun going cross country with a buddy, many,many years ago.
Today, I just use my smartphone to call someone. I guess for kids, or family, it could be "fun". Or if you have someone living a house away, might be ok, but why not message them with smartphone. It does bring up the old times, of repeaters, and all that stuff. If you want to hear any radio station in the world, use can get garden radio, and roam the world, and there are other type internet ways of doing ham radio listening too.
Get this for the fun, I guess, or use smartphone. Smilie
