3M Temflex Rubber Splicing Tape is a self vulcanizing rubber tape best suited for insulating low voltage and 600 volt connections, especially bolted, split bolt, and awkwardly shaped wire joints. It is described as weatherproof and useful in harsh environments, with a tight rubber to rubber wrap that fuses into a solid mass over time. The tape also gets used for temporary hose repairs and fruit tree grafting. The main caution is that it must be applied correctly by removing the backing as you wrap, and it can become slippery when wet.

I don't know what the trick is to get it to stick. For me, the end keeps lifting up and unravelling. And when I stretch it, it eventually retracts back to un-stretched. Unless it has something to do with the membrane attached to the underside. But that doesn't seem likely.
The backing is to keep it from becoming a solid rubber wheel on the roll. You remove the backer by slightly stretching the tape & peeling it off before you wrap your connection stretching the tape with rubber touching rubber half overlapping your wraps. When you're done it should be a fairly tight conforming wrap with no exposed metal. Then once the tape sits for a while and usually warmed up from use it will fuse into a solid lump of rubber as opposed to regular electrical tape that turns in way hot sticky unwinding mess.
Once it fuses you'll need a sharp blade to remove it.

This is self vulcanizing rubber vs regular electrical tape which is vinyl. This is better for harsh environments and is good for up to 600v (per half-lapped wrap). Commonly used to insulate bolted connections as it stretches and forms well.
600v?! I thought this was for low voltage?

I presume this should be functional as a wrap for a fishing rod handle?

Among many other things, yes. I've even used rubber tape to (temp) repair low pressure water hoses/pipes Smilie

I use this for fruit tree grafting: useful for making the tight bond between scion and rootstock until the graft has healed.

I usually use this for split bolt connections or lugs on 3 phase motors, after glass tape and prior to wrapping with 33+ and/or friction in dry environments.
Temflex may become slippery when wet.

After using this we would then wrap 3M Super 33+ tape over that to keep it in place.

So, it's silicone tape?

And if you are considerate for your 'buddy,' put a BACKWARDS lap of 33+ on the lugs prior to wrapping with the rubber. Much easier to remove when you have to determinate motor leads, etc.
