highly recommend you have one on hand. I bought one a while back and have used it a few times when I thought i smelled gas. Last year had a plumber change a gas line and turns out there was a legitimate leak i tracked down with this which was only occuring when the appliance downstream wasnt running (water heater).
Once in a lifetime event for most people. If and when you suspect a leak you'll have forgotten where you put this thing. And only $5 off? Ffs! Pass.

If you're considering buying this and you don't regularly work with gas, you should take a long hard look at your spending habits.

Call your gas company if you suspect a leak. This is a free service.

Good advice - but why not do both and check for immediate danger while you wait for them to arrive?

A lot of times they'll come and turn off the gas and tell you hire a plumber to fix the leak, then get an inspection to prove it's leak free, and only then they will resume service. It will cost more calling the gas company than just calling a plumber.

This saved me a ton of money. Didnt need to have gas shut off. Didnt have to call 24/7 plumbing. Find the small leak quickly that was puffing out some gas. Shut off the valve on the line and move on. Saved me a fortune compared to what I would pay to have a 24/7 plumber come out. I would say my once in a lifetime event saved a considerable amount of money and was well worth $5 off.
I've also used it to verify no leaks after shifting around dryer and other appliances. Also confirming whether gas leaks were from stove top being slightly left open rather than a leak from behind units. Sure you can just call a plumber if you have questions but thats going to cost a fortune.

This happened to me. No heat or hot water over a weekend (stupidly called on a Thursday, and fixed it myself same day, but Xcel said 2 business days to turn it on. Ended up reconnecting the gas myself.... Yeah, don't do that by the way).

Anyway, about the deal. I asked the Xcel guy, he told me anything that isn't a professional level version is a waste of time and money. You're better off with sniff test and soapy water. And that worked fine for me.

99.9% of people will never need this. If by any chance they are planning some activity related to assing around with gas appliances they can grab this at Lowes anytime for just $5 more. They'll have a fresh new device with new batteries rather than having to hunt it down and dig it out of their underwear drawer only to find that the batteries have leaked and it doesn't work.

As I said, I'm not arguing about the tool here. This is about wasting money on things that you might never need and that just clutter up your life. The slickest deal is to not spend money if you don't need to. For almost everyone here, this is one of those deals.
