I agree. A dress watch or any watch without a thick bezel (diver, chronograph) should not be over 39mm, preferably 38mm or less. Otherwise it looks comical. For a diving watch or chronograph, it can go to 41mm or sometimes 42-43mm depending on the lug to lug.

If that's your preference, then you do you. But I know plenty of big guys who pull off less than 40mm dress watches. Again we are talking specifically dress watches, not divers or chronographs.
But if you really feel like you need a bigger watch, just get a diver or chronograph.
