I bought the 2x18V LXT mower first... Used it for ~3 years. In early 2025, bought the XGT mower at HD (clearance, $500). Bought 2x 8.0Ah batteries, and then two more individually. I was SO impressed with the XGT mower that I wish I'd bought it in the first place. It just POWERS through things where the LXT mower would get bogged down.
I also don't use the self propulsion. The 40V XGT mower rolls much more easily without the self propulsion. The 2x18V LXT mower offers more resistance if you're not using the self propulsion. I get a killer workout with the XGT mower, and the batteries last longer since I'm not using the self-propulsion.
Annoyingly, there's no physical switch to change batteries. The 2x18V LXT mower does have that. But whatever. As soon as the red light starts flashing, I manually switch batteries. I prefer not to run them down close to 0%. And I charge them using the slow charger.
If you're committed to Makita tools, then buying a couple of 8.0Ah batteries shouldn't be an issue. Get THIS MOWER and not the LXT mower. Trust me. WORTH the expense.
XGT 8.0Ah batteries are 21700 cell containing beasts. And, unlike garbage Milwaukee, Makita implements CELL BALANCING. So you won't end up (like I did), with expensive-assed 12.0Ah 18V batteries that will only charge to 3/4 and need MANUAL BALANCING .
