I have 2 of these I got from Amazon. Got one a bit cheaper because it was Used, but I liked it so much I ended up getting another at the $100-ish full price at the time.

Mine run cool, and feel nice and sturdy.

Transfers are a tad faster even when used on a crapdop that doesn't even do 10Gbps 3.2.

--

The 'swap drives' image is a flat-out lie. It's almost a bad English way of trying to explain that each drive has its own power switch. There is NO WAY you're swapping out any drives on it while it's connected.

Even though pics can make it look like it's a joy to swap in/out drives, no, it's super annoying...like if you've ever experienced doing so in a PC case where you/someone else decided 'This time, I will use ALL the screw mounts!' when mounting the hard drives...plus add like 6 more screws, and you NEED to use them all.

---

It also has a weird optical illusion where you don't -think- it's going to weigh a lot when filled, but hoooo boy it seems like the 4 drives double in weight when you pick it up Big Grin

Oh and if anyone is confused by the HDMI jack, it's just a passthrough for if your USB-C on the computer side is the video output.

there's no vents on the bottom or top? then the form factor with those "handles" or "stands" doesn't make sense. Frown

I'd buy this if it was just a plain cube

Yeah no vents is really bad. You have to drill holes to get decent airflow. The handle and stands is stupid. Can't stack them and take up too much vertical space. Very bad design.

Lolz over 10 years ago I got an old broken laptop (no dispaly and no keyboard (slow 3rd gen i3). I put win10 on it as an experiment quickly filled up the internal drive. Added a 4tb external (plenty of room because my 2 nas's had 4 each. Then I added a 8tb drive, as my needs grew. I added a 2nd 8tb drive. I remembered this was intended to be an experimental build. Built a proper Linux NAS os messed up my docker stuff (didn't know at the time) but my little windows based experimental "NAS" was running just fine. I finally build the Linux based NAS. Learning to keep my dockers on a 2nd box. I am thinking about getting this and mounting it to a Linux based NAS to keep off site for off site back-ups.

Let people have fun. Is it the enterprise way, no. Will it work Idk, it did for me.

So to be clear it pulls in air from front and vents in back. No need for bottom and top vents?

No, it needs a host system.

You can connect it to your router's USB port or a Raspberry Pi, but performance might not be as good as connecting it to a PC.

The stands do slightly help with thermals even without direct ventilation. Elevating the enclosure away from insulators always helps.

But they're actually better at noise isolation.

Both would be worse if you put your cube directly on a shelf or desk.

If you'll notice, every DAS and NAS has feet, even if they're just low profile rubber squares.

That's what most people do with these, in addition to making Plex servers.
