This is a compact 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner with a remote, best suited for a bedroom, garage, porch, or other single room where floor space is tight. It can cool a room enough to be livable, and the smaller footprint is a real plus compared with bulkier dual hose units. The main tradeoffs are the single hose design, which is less efficient and can pull in warm air, plus frequent condensate draining and noticeable noise. Fit and reliability concerns also came up, including awkward window installation and reports of units failing after months.

Mine arrived yesterday. This setup is ugly as ****. Maybe okay for use in a double-wide, but I don't want it in my home. Window panel does not come close to fitting my window (which is a standard double-pane). The extension is too long and will block 80% of the opening unless I take a saw to it. The bottom of the opening is also blocked about 20% by the window sash, so I'll have to put some sort of spacer under it to raise it up, There also appears to be no way to actually mount this securely, so you just stick it in there and hope the window itself holds it in place along with a bunch of duct tape. Instructions for installation are virtually worthless, so you have to figure most of it out on your own. Combining this with all the negative comments about single hose and life expectancy convinces me to box it up and return.

I gotta take a shot at explaining the single hose vs dual hose here. Many other explanations are correct but may not "click" for everybody. So here goes...

Any device that exhausts indoor air inherently causes an equal amount of outdoor air to be drawn back into the house. Period. This is true whether it is a kitchen range hood, bathroom exhaust fan, "traditional" clothes dryer, a single-hose portable AC, or any of a number of other examples.

And this air comes in through any number of places. Under/around exterior doors, through the seam between sections of double hung windows, through electrrical outlet boxes in exterior walls, and so on. Gaps, cracks, crevices, holes.

A dual hose portable AC does not exhaust indoor air***. A single hose does. So why is this?

Both have two distinct air streams. One to cool the indoor air, and the other to blow out the heat that is being "removed" from the indoor air.

In both types of units, the first airstream is the same. They draw interior air in, cool it, and blow it back out. This stream does not exhaust air, regardless of single hose vs dual hose.

For the second "air stream" however, a dual hose unit uses one hose to intake exterior air and the other hose to exhaust it, meaning it does not exhaust interior air***. But a single hose unit draws in INTERIOR air for this stream, and exhausts it out the window through its single hose.

So how big of a deal is this? The answer is that it is typically quite a considerable effect. Some thoughts on this...

The "make-up air" (the outdoor air that is drawn into the home through gaps somewhere) is going to come in through the path of least resistance. That's physics. And much of the makeup air often comes in through the partially-opened window where the exhaust hose is installed, meaning right back into the room being cooled. Not good, of course. But if one is very diligent about sealing around the exhaust hose and the rest of the window, and all other windows in this room, this could be reduced to where a greater proportion of the "makeup air" is coming in through other parts of the house/building, which may be less noticable if the rest of the house is effectively cooled otherwise, perhaps by central AC.

The dual hose units cost more, and this is slickdeals after all. Personally I would spring for a dual hose unit. Hope this helps somebody.

***the earlier claim that dual hose units don't exhaust air is not technically correct. They do exhaust a small amount, IE, the intake hose provides like 95% of the intake air from outdoors, and the remaining 5% comes from the interior air. On some models it is easy to see where, often a small grid of holes on the side. The reasons for this all come down to engineering tradeoffs. But at the end of the day, dual hose is a big improvement to single hose.

quick tidbit, Midea makes (and licenses to other brands like Whynter) a dual hose unit where they smushed the two hoses into a single "fat" hose, which does look a bit nicer IMO. It's not ideal that the hoses are smushed together like this as in practice, it's more efficient to have the exhaust hose and intake hose separated by at least a few inches and ideally more, but I think it's a cool idea.

Costco sells the Midea for about $400 but reviews are a little concerning, lots of failures and error codes.

Some other (non-smushed) dual-hose models around that price point...

Whynter ARC-1280WX $429.99 through Lowes.com or BestBuy.com, sold and shipped by Whynter.
Whynter ARC-14S $419.99 from Amazon, $439.99 from Home Depot.

Similar advertised cooling capacities (10k BTU and 9.5k BTU SACC). The 1280WX is a new model this year with inverter tech (variable speed compressor). The 14S has been around a while and is single speed but claims to be relatively quiet. No experience with either personally.

For anyone still wanting to know why single hose units get so much hate...

TLDW: If no other options by all means get it, but window units prevail followed by dual hose, then single hose.

This appears to be just a single-hose unit, so it's creating suction inside your house, drawing warm air in. Happy to be corrected.
You better not get a clothes dryer then...🤫 it TOO has a single-hose unit blowing out the house.........creating suction inside your house. 😏

They create negative pressure in the room which means warm air from the outside will get pulled in via cracks in your house to overcome it. They are less efficient then dual hose units. That being said obviously a single hose unit can easily overcome that warm air and still cool the room fine. So it comes down to cost. If you will be running it all the time and can get a dual hose for $50 or even maybe $100 more, it could be a better choice. But if it's like $200 more then single hose is the most cost effective.
OH! like how the clothes dryer does?

Yes. But if you are trying to use your clothes dryer to cool your home, you're doing it wrong.

The best explanation I've seen around here is single hose is like trying to fill a tub with the drain plug open. With enough water pressure toi can do it, but it's highly inefficient. The kicker is all these manufacturers need to do is attach a second hose to the air inlet on the back, some units even have a 2 hose conversion kit and some folks have been modified their single hose to dual hose by doing this. Not saying they won't cool, they just don't do so efficiently. This is especially true if you are using one to supplement uneven cooling in a home with HVAC. At least from my own personal experience.

The other downside to the hose in hose design is it really has no give left or right. So if for whatever reason you can't stick it right under your window, like if you have a bed there for example, it won't work. The 2 hose designs have some flex and can be offset several feet from the window.

Does your house furnace have a separate air intake for the air it burns and pushes out the exhaust,,most don't and the effect is minimal,,,your way over thinking this
