Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 5 is shaping up as a compact gaming and emulation tablet with a fast Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, 8.8 inch 3K 165 hertz display, and strong handheld-friendly size. The IPS panel gets praise for smoothness and overall improvement over earlier Legion Tabs, and the microSD slot adds welcome storage flexibility. The main knocks are the $649.99 price, the 12GB and 256GB configuration, and uncertainty around Lenovo's software update commitment. It feels best suited to gaming-focused buyers who value performance and portability over OLED and top-tier storage.
Common Questions (5)
At $649.99, many see it as expensive for a 12GB/256GB tablet, especially compared with past import pricing and occasional couponed deals. Others still consider it reasonable for the Snapdragon 8 Elite, gaming focus, and Lenovo-direct warranty, but the commonly cited sweet spot is closer to $500-$550.
It can work, but the Chinese ROM has drawbacks for US use: some versions lack 6GHz Wi‑Fi support and may have different Wi‑Fi bands, making them less ideal on US networks. Buyers also mention that the Lenovo-direct US version is easier to return and avoids firmware uncertainty.
Yes. The Legion Tab Gen 5 includes a microSD slot, and the Gen 3 is the one that lacked expandable storage. That makes the 256GB base model less limiting if you want to add storage for games and media.
Yes. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is well suited to Android gaming, emulation, and PC translation layers, and the 8.8-inch size is favored for handheld-style play. It handles indie and older AAA titles well, while newer AAA games can run into thermal and memory limits on 12GB RAM.
Lenovo has not clearly committed the US Gen 5 to a specific OS-upgrade count, and that uncertainty is a concern at this price. Some comments cite a Lenovo commitment of 4 years of updates and 3 OS upgrades, while others note the Gen 5 listing itself does not spell it out.

I respect the performance levels of the Snapdragon Elite processor, but I've seen that screen in person. Middle of the road quality at best and you're only going to see one or two OS updates from Lenovo.
You're right there's no comparison, but not for the reasons you think.
I have the Legion Tab Gen 3 and Gen 5 as well as a Legion Go 2 (OLED). The IPS screen on the Tab 5 is great. I was very pleased with it.
Lenovo is supposedly committing to 4 years of updates and 3 OS upgrades.
Bought it at a great price. The price for the Gen 5 seems a bit steep for me, but that's the case with almost everything these days. It's depressing when you have to go and purchase a PC, a laptop, or a tablet. If you want an alternative to a Samsung that has a fantastic CPU, my gosh, that Elite chip is incredible. I have a previous iteration on my phone and it's amazing.
The pin is decent. It didn't come bundled with a Gen 3, and I bought it, and it's useful, but I don't use it a lot. If that's important to you, you're going to want to go with a Samsung.
So, if you want a very high functioning tablet & the price works for you, you're going to love the Gen 5.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to pull the trigger on this but I'd rather get the 16GB/512GB configuration. I'd really like to get it directly from Lenovo but unfortunately, that's not available through their website. I'd have to get the Y700 variant from Aliexpress or Giztop. I'd probably lean towards Giztop being the more reliable vendor.
Has anyone purchased from Giztop and can report on their experience and most importantly, the firmware it came with?
I'd also be interested in opinions if it'd still be more beneficial getting the lower configuration directly from Lenovo (e.g. hardware differences like the aforementioned Wifi radio).

I've decided to shun Samsung going forward because I'm sick of the constant unremovable bloatware with every update.
If you want to play Indie games and Stream the Tab 3 is fine.
