Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 5 is shaping up as a compact gaming and emulation tablet with a fast Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, 8.8 inch 3K 165 hertz display, and strong handheld-friendly size. The IPS panel gets praise for smoothness and overall improvement over earlier Legion Tabs, and the microSD slot adds welcome storage flexibility. The main knocks are the $649.99 price, the 12GB and 256GB configuration, and uncertainty around Lenovo's software update commitment. It feels best suited to gaming-focused buyers who value performance and portability over OLED and top-tier storage.

I have the Tab 3 and G9 controller. It's fantastic for emulation on the couch.

Not having SD card support sucks but 256gb isn't as restricting as I thought it might be given how easy FTP file transfers are.

Here's to hoping the gen 5 drops to $500 by Prime Day if not BF.

My Gen 3 is still getting updates. How are you supposed to check future support? Do you have a time machine?
Your Gen 3 will get at least Android 17 as they've committed to 3 major updates. The Gen 5 oddly doesn't seem to commit to any OS updates while your Gen 3 does say "Android™ 14 (supports 3 OS upgrades)" right in the tech specs on the Lenovo site. Not committing for the Gen 5 makes it easier for Lenovo to abandon it. Makes it more difficult to choose the Gen 5 if Lenovo can't even promise OS upgrades. More than likely the Gen 5 will get Android 17, but they don't guarantee anything.

Lenovo used to have OLED tablets, but they have switched to only LCD. If you want OLED, you'll have to look elsewhere.

On Aliexpress the price is 802 with a 90 coupon for the 16/512 config. The 12/256 config is 690 with same 90 coupon. Both prices a far cry from 500

I've purchased many of the Chinese versions, a major issue is that they restrict the WiFi there and you can't get the latest protocols.
This is just low tech knowledge born out of ignorance. Different wifi bands doesn't mean 'restrict the Wifi'. Learn to change the bands on your router, and all issues will resolve.

This price it is not bad. It's fair considering the specs.
I was leaning between this and the gen 3 for weeks, since the 3 would serve me well too for a while. But eventually I decided to bite the bullet on this one.

I just upgraded from a Tab 3 to 5. The screen is a bit nicer (not that the Tab 3 is bad). The chip set is better for some PC games. Both are nice tablets. However you will find the Tab 5 to be better.

Not exact confirmation like we got on the Gen 3. Maybe 1 OS update to 3 OS update (like on the Gen 3) is a possibility. They basically never committed when they released the Gen 5. I've heard they made commitment for other markets, but just didn't for the US market.

Would be a little disappointing if it got less than 3, especially with the price being what it is.

It'll probably get as many updates as the Gen 3. I can't imagine that Lenovo will do the Gen 5 dirty and drop it after a year. I would only worry about it if Lenovo was planning to drop Android tablets from their lineup in the near future. Aside from that, I can't think of a reason for them to not support it for than a year.
