This restored Midea Duo portable air conditioner is valued for strong cooling, dual hose efficiency, inverter operation, and the ability to handle large rooms without breaker trips. Several units arrived looking new and worked well for months, with some cooling quickly and running quietly enough to be tolerable. The main drawback is inconsistent refurb quality, with reports of missing adapters, remotes, wheels, dirty hoses, error codes, and even full water buckets on arrival. Warranty and returns also appear limited, so the savings come with real condition and support risk.

Common Questions (5)

  • No. Several units arrived missing the horizontal or vertical window adapter, and some also lacked the remote or wheel. A few arrived complete and looked basically new, so accessory completeness appears inconsistent.

  • It is a gamble: some units arrive like new and run well for months, while others show error codes, loud fan problems, bent vents, or missing parts right out of the box. The practical tradeoff is a much lower price versus the risk of a bad refurb and return hassle.

  • It can cool large rooms quickly and the dual-hose design is more effective than single-hose portables, but it still uses more power than a comparable window unit. One report measured roughly 250W running, while another found it used about 2-2.5x the watts of an 8,000 BTU window unit for the same space.

  • Yes, a P1 error can be caused by a full water bucket or a tripped float sensor. Emptying the bucket or correcting the sensor/tilt resolved the issue for multiple units, and one unit also needed a slight backward tilt to drain properly.

  • The listing is restored-like-new and does not include a one-year warranty; it is tied to a 90-day return policy. Walmart returns were reported as sometimes easy in-store, but some buyers were directed to UPS or had to use chat to get a shipping label.

I got this maybe 5 weeks ago to replace the Midea Ushape I had because HOA sucks. Had an 8000 BTU window unit working great and had to replace with this.

This uses about 2-2.5x as many watts to cool the same space as the window unit.

Mine was missing the horizontal window kit and the power cord wrap. Fortunately, I didn't need the horizontal kit. If you do, I wouldn't recommend trying your luck with this.

It's not as quiet as our window unit, but it's fine. I just hate spending more on electric so our house is uniform with the other houses.
I totally agree with you that HOAs suck!

That said, your new unit using considerably more watts is expected:
1. Portable AC units use more than traditional Window AC units just by the nature of their design. For one, the condenser coil and compressor are both in the room with you and while the hose directs most of the heat from those components outside, it does not get all of it. The hose itself also gets quite warm, and again, the hose is inside the room with you which means it is adding heat to the room. This means a portable AC unit has to work harder to remove heat from a room than a traditional window unit.
2. You went from 8,000 BTUs to 12,000 BTUs. That is a substantial increase. If you had 2 Midea U units that were identical other than one being 8,000 BTUs and the other being 12,000 BTUs, the difference in amperage ratings alone accounts for nearly a 50% increase in power consumption.

PS - If your 8k unit was previously doing a great job of keeping the area in question cool and dry, you may encounter short cycling and moisture issues with a 12k unit both in the room and in the unit itself. I'd make sure to give the 12k unit plenty of time in fan mode to help keep the moisture inside the unit in check.

So far, the inverter is doing fine for the room even with the extra BTU. No humidity or short cycling issues.

I had both of these on meters and noticed the window unit could drop to about 120w or so while maintaining the room temp. I've seen the portable drop down to about 200w maintaining.

I'm not really complaining about the energy consumption of the portable. I expected it to be higher and was just sharing my experience. My complaint is about the HOA. lol

I actually moved the UShape window unit to a back window to see if the HOA doesn't notice/complain.

Good specs but no real reviews... Is this the model that gets returned / refurbed often for leaking refrigerant?
There's plenty of reviews on the model itself, just search the model #. As others have said it's a crapshoot. It's dual hose which is far more efficient/effective than single hose, but also "hose in hose" design which makes it slightly less efficient. For the ones that fail I haven't seen it be leaky refrigerant. It's often the main blower fan error, and sometimes a sensor, although I can't recall which one atm. The ones that do die seem to die shortly after starting to use it. Not saying that's always the case but based on the posts that seems to be the trend. Walmart use to sell addon allstate warranties for ~$30/3 yrs but I can't find those anymore.

I got the p1 error immediately upon trying it but there's no water as far as I can tell, i unplugged both drains and tilted it back with nothing coming out. I'm hoping maybe some refrigerant or oil or something just needs to settle after shipping poorly but not a great sign.. any other tips? Returning this is going to be a pain if I cant figure it out.

The rotating vent was also dislodged but I was able to pop it back into place.
On the upside, at least I got the controller and correct window ports...

edit: I took off the back and found out that float sensor had broken off wherever it was intended to be, so it was resting tripped on the bottom. I think I'll probably just try to afix it somewhere with epoxy or tape since the unit otherwise seems to be in good condition and working. While keeping the box in good condition for possible return later. If only i could find a picture of where its supposed to be..

I bought one last year when it was on sale for $200. Main unit looked good. The hose was yellow from sun exposure and a little dirty. One of the tabs that holds the hose into the window vent pretty much broke right off the bat. I used a rubber band to keep the tab in the vent. I received a remote that is not the original but works for all functions. As far as I know it had all the rest of the accessories. Even though it says you don't have to I removed the drain plug that is in the middle of the back of the unit and ran the hose out of it into an empty 1 gallon jug as it does drain some water when being used. That being said I do like it. We have bad wiring in our building and trying to run even just a 5000 BTU wall unit and my gaming PC while playing a game and streaming movies on my PS5 on the same circuit would consistently blow our breaker. With this unit using a inverter I can let it cool the room for a bit then fire up the PC and PS5 and it never blows the breaker while running.

The problem with a lot of these portable or window AC is molding. Anyone have any experience with molding with this particular unit? Is it easy to clean to prevent molding?
I am in humid environment. I never had to change the water and never got mold in the airways like I always have with window acs. I have only used it 1 year though so maybe its cumulative.

I got mine today. It works good. But it was missing a wheel on the bottom so it would drag if I tried to move it. Currently in process with customer service to try to get a replacement wheel.

Update: found out it was missing the adapter for sliding glass windows. Trying to get another missing part.

The listing says they are "Restored Like New" condition which does not include a one year warranty, only a 90 day return policy.

I was planning on going to Costco today to get one of these to help me get through the summer as my central AC is on its last leg. Trying to get a new system installed during this time of year is not going to be easy so hopefully this helps me make it through the summer so I get get something installed in the fall or early spring next year.
This seems like a better idea since it will then just be kept for an emergency...

My family room Midea inverter window unit has been bullet proof, reading through this thread and reviews their portable unit not so much. I'm in no hurry to replace our bedroom portable, but when I do I think I'll just bite the bullet and pay for the Whynter ARC-1230. Much better reviews from owners and sites that perform comparison testing. Strangely there may well be some common components between the two units.

Window units are more efficient and more reliable. The only issue I've heard of with the midea window units was the drainage/mold issue recall.

Received mine today - the box was destroyed - multiple breaks - and worst of all it was coated in dog hair and stunk like a dog. Unfortunately my only return option is in a store so I have to lug this box to a store.

Do not purchase, I bought one July 2025 and it died in May, Midea had no warranty or no service whatsoever on a refurbished unit sold by Midea.

I now have to dispose the unit at cost to myself.

Beware of lack of warranty and service.

Ordered from ebay and paid 210. Order arrived and blows cold but hose was dirty and unit already showing error code 54. Contacting midea on what they want done with the unit before shipping it back.

Bought from Walmart and it came in a pretty beat up box. So bad that fedex took it back on day of delivery to inspect it then brought it back the next day. It was missing the adapter to use with sliding windows, which I need. I contacted midea and they were terrible. Had to chase them down for updates and in the end they said the unit is not covered by them. So just gonna return this junker and find something else. These Chinese rebrands have no clue how to handle customer service.
