Dell's XPS 13 here reads as a very light premium ultraportable, with the strongest draws being its 2.2 pound aluminum build, touchscreen, backlit keyboard, and 2.5K 120Hz display. The Core 5 320 is described as surprisingly strong in single core performance for a low power Intel chip, and the machine is framed as especially appealing for travel and light work. The main knocks are price and memory flexibility, since the 16GB model sits well above the 8GB base and the RAM is not upgradable. It feels like a polished small laptop, but the value depends heavily on how much the weight and screen matter.

Common Questions (6)

  • It is positioned as a strong ultra-light Windows alternative because it weighs about 2.2 lb, has a touchscreen, and includes a backlit keyboard. The main caveat is price: the EDU config is seen as close to MacBook Air territory, and the base $599 model only has 8GB RAM, so the $749.99 version is mainly paying for 16GB.

  • Yes. The panel is described as a 13.4-inch 2.5K touchscreen with 120Hz refresh and 500-nit brightness, and it is repeatedly called a standout feature over non-touch alternatives.

  • The laptop is about 2.2 lb, which makes it unusually light for a full Windows laptop in this price range. That weight is the main reason it is attractive for frequent travel and light work on the go.

  • No, the RAM is not upgradable, so the 16GB configuration matters if you need more memory. The base EDU model is 8GB, and that limitation is a major reason some shoppers consider it poor value.

  • The base EDU model is $599 with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage, while the $749.99 version adds 16GB RAM. That means the extra $150 is mainly paying for the memory upgrade.

  • No headphone jack is mentioned, and one practical workaround is using a USB dock or dongle. A Plugable DisplayLink dock can be used to connect a headphone adapter.

I think it was their gaming line before Alien but I'm really not sure. Starting in 2013 it was the line that was kind of a Mac alternative in terms of build quality, features etc. For a while the XPS13 and 15 were "the best" Windows laptops. When placed next to the Macbooks of the time they were about even in terms of quality of build, screen, keyboards etc.
Yeah, I'm very familiar with what the XPS line is about...my question was partly sarcastic in that this low-end performance laptop has the Extreme Performance "XPS" name.

This is an incredible deal for one primary reason: The weight. 2.2lbs is insanely light, and once you get used to that kind of weight, even the MacBook Neo or Air's 2.7lbs will feel like a brick. Before this Dell, the only way to get something in this weight range was either the (now discontinued) Lenovo X1 Nano, or the really expensive X1 Carbon or LG Gram series laptops. This is the first time I have seen a laptop in this price range ($699 to $899) that weighs only 2.2lbs. This is lot more than just a Neo competitor. This is the perfect business laptop for those that travel a lot. I think this Dell will end up doing really well for just that reason. I am definitely interested in picking one for just for the weight for international travel where I need to do some light work without needing the horsepower of a faster workstation level laptop. The bright 120Hz display, backlit keyboard are absolutely incredible to have at this price. I am not an Apple user as I just don't like their ecosystem, but I am thankful to Apple for the Neo as that will push a lot more innovation at these kinds of prices.

This seems to have a 16:9 aspect ratio? Had this come with a 16:10 screen, to me this would have been a better machine than 13-inch macbook air --- it has almost the same size screen but has a 120Hz refresh rate & touch functionality, and it is significantly (200g+) lighter.

Sux I have a Lenovo yoga for my portable computer that works great but I need more ram. So I literally have to consider spending 750 just because I need more ram. Ridiculous!
We need to start really complaining about not getting upgradable ram. And maybe one manufacturer will bring it back then when they see all the business goes to the company that allows ram upgrades then we win.
Because it's only a matter of time before they start integrate the SSDs. Then we will have stupid fools saying "oh they do that because it's faster". Smfh. No they do it for the exact reason that I need a whole new laptop now just because I need more ram. And it's BS.
Sorry for my rant but yea this computer is not a good deal for 750. Sorry not even close.

šŸ˜‚ seriously it's low to mid range. No discreet graphics. A mid range CPU. Idk it's just becoming a way to trick people into buying a low spec laptop for premium money.

I kind of agree that it might be better to have XPS always include the better parts but for some the hp isn't the magic, it's the build, keyboard and screen quality. I'm still daily driving a 12 year old XPS15 based computer in part because the keyboard and screen are still great. It doesn't hurt that mine did have a lot of hp for its time thus can still keep up today.

What does discreet graphics have to do with anything? This thing weights 2.2 lbs...

I agree. The usual brainless comments from people who compare a 2.2lb laptop to a 5lb one. Not every laptop needs to be a gaming laptop.

Got this today and oh boy, this is an impressive machine. Not going to burn down crazy tasks with it but it's almost regular Xps quality feel with a great screen, touchscreen, backlir keyboard, and extremely light. Lightest windows PC over ever seen that was a regular laptop. Supposedly the M6 air is also 2.2 lbs, but a single kilo for a decent machine is a marvel

Nice I'm reading great things about it. Have not got mine yet. The screen, portability, single core performance, and probably even good battery with that chip? Looks outstanding. I did get the 16GB version. This has a touchscreen and backlit keyboard unlike the Neo for probably most those are must haves. Honestly the Neo is kinda wack to me but I understand Apple fans are fierce and loyal and its pretty cheap.

I got $45 off due to my AAA membership, and $25 in Dell Rewards, which I assume I'll use to buy a dongle or something. I do lament the lack of a headphone jack but I happen to own a Plugable Displaylink dock so I can plug my headphone jack dongle into that.
My plan is to run Linux on this machine. As for the M6 air, it could be years before folks get Linux running on it, so I shan't wait for it.

Yeah. If you strip out a lot of the crap from Win11 it feels very much like Win10 which was quite good. Honestly, every time I've had to use Mac OS for any length of time I just don't like it. Often when I hear people complaining about Windows my first thought is they are wrong... then I remember that I'm only working with business machines that have clean copies of Windows and I typically strip out a lot of crap when I first setup the computer. Not exactly the same as someone who is using a stock Windows install. I do like things about Macs, and the Apple hardware is generally very nice (we have Macs in the house but they aren't mine). I also appreciate that Macs can last a long time. But so can Windows computers. The one I'm using right now is 12 years old and works great... but it was not a low end computer when new. Apple is good about making sure even the "low end" computers aren't low end (often even in price).
I'm a Windows guy but bought a MacBook pro m1 renewed off Amazon and been running strong for 3 years what gets me is the extreme battery life it has. otherwise i still like windows much more and use it for my gaming rig
