I wonder if it'll melt if I put it out in direct sunlight or will it just discolor.

Could be handy for my dacha in Verkhoyansk [which holds the record for the greatest recorded range at a single location, from -67.7°C (-90°F) to 38.0°C (100.4°F)].

Looks wasteful for a thermometer and too much like a clock. It must take a lot of extra energy to move a dial, and it's a point of failure. Only takes liquid a small movement in a tube.

For the sake of humanity, and your mental health, I hope that's sarcasm.

Hardly. These aren't accurate, and don't hold up well. Read the reviews. Even the description says don't use in straight sun light. That is because they aren't designed right. And they made them to look like clocks.

I'm finding there are enough idiots out there now I have to explain everything in detail for them to understand anything.

Real analog thermometers were made with mercury, in tubes. And very accurate. Later other liquids when the eco nuts complained.
I read the description. They appear to be using heated metal, either two or one in a spring. This isn't very accurate, and why it won't even hold up in direct sunlight.

ie save your money and get a real outdoor thermometer.

So random no name generic Chinese will be better? At least suggest something made by reliable company not a total random Temu thermometer.

I own two of these.
They are not accurate when in the sun because the sun heats up the unit.
Big is good if you are looking at it far away or your eyesight needs something bigger.
If it falls, it will could crack but nothing that some crazy glue won't fix.

Sun heating up the unit has nothing to do with it. How the internals work and it being in the sun is the problem. Heating up metal, whether a strip, or some type of over complicated metal spring rotating a dial which at some point is probably going to clog is the problem.

If something has better engineering principles, it's going to work better no matter who makes it.

This thing isn't as good as how thermometers have traditionally been made because of how it is made.

Amazon ratings aren't usually very accurate, but I usually look if it can achieve a 90% satisfaction rating in the 5 star and 4 star ratings. This only gets a 76%. 34% are below that.

Let's look at some of them: "Don't buy...

Very flimsy very cheap and in fact is 20° off if not more. The weather app says it's 81°F where I'm at ...this product says it's 120° F.

Unfortunately, I threw the packaging away, so I can't return it."
"People talking about how great this is. Give me a break. It's a very light weight, plastic piece of junk. That shouldn't cost $5, if that. I would be surprised if it last a year. Or doesn't blow away. Of course most of these are junk anyway, but I was at least hoping for a descent weight to the plastic, Find another."
"Did not really work even after trying the tricks someone posted about. I bought 2 of these.
I kept these up for about a week so I could see how it changes temp from inside my Coop and closed in Run during the night.
One moved a little but still not accurate by any means. The other just sits at one temp even though the temp in there changed 15 degrees. I know this because I had 2 other thermometers in there to make sure of the true temp. I just wanted something bigger to see easier in my Cameras as I check on the Hens.
Will be returning.
It changed if you tapped on the plastic... but that doesn't help me now does it

"
etc etc.

Q: where is it Search term:made?
A: It says on the back of the box that the company is Taylor Precision Products, Oak Brook, Ill. Below that it states the following: "Search term:Made to our exact specifications in China". I hope this helps you.
