The BatleXP G350 is a low cost retro emulation handheld that feels like a rebadged Anbernic, with notably better plastics, buttons, triggers, and sticks than the R36s. It handles PS1 and GBA comfortably, and even Mario 64 mostly fine, while N64, PSP, Dreamcast, and games like Goldeneye can struggle or stutter. The stock system is bloated with mediocre games, but custom firmware options like dArkOS, ArkOS, Pan4Elec, and Knulli are available. The included microSD cards have been mixed, so backing them up and keeping a spare card on hand is wise.

It's the same price why wouldn't I just buy the original that comes with a case?
At least with the "Classic Up" models, (Rebranded RG35XX Pro) I just saw I was able to get it for $28. ($31 after tax) Bizarrely, it didn't let me use a coupon, it just had a one-time reduced price of $44, with $16 in AliExpress coins being usable. I have well over $100 in coins built up that I can rarely use, so this was very interesting indeed. Usually coin discounts are only 1-5%, not 30%. You have to use the Ali App to see that offer, add the handheld to your cart, then go back into the coins section to view the special offer.

That's $29 less than the lowest priced RG35xx Pro I can find on Aliexpress. ($61 shipped at the moment) Generally the RG35xx Pro is available on sale for ~$50 shipped. It never includeds a case BTW, that's an extra expense you typically pay $5-$10 more.

DS is an interesting platform to emulate because if the 2nd screen. Some games really need that 2nd screen, while with others it's an afterthought. If you go with a single screen device, widescreen handhelds like the Mangmi Aix X are a decent lower priced option that can display both screens side by side. It's also a stellar PSP emulator. It's often on sale under $100. Recently it was available for $85 before tax on Ali.

An entry level handheld that can play all DS games with 2 screens would be the Anbernic RG DS. It's seen some serious improvements since launch with the stock OS, and GammaOS makes it a good experience with DS as well. I haven't personally used one of these, but they now appear to be a great way to play DS games. It isn't powerful enough for 3DS unfortunately. It's currently around $100 on Aliexpress, but I have frequently seen it as low as $85 before taxes.

On the high end is the Ayn Thor. It can play all DS and virtually all 3DS games with few problems. It is however 3x the price as the RG DS, so with quality comes a cost.

There are a smattering of other options out there like adding a secondary screen to a Retroid Pocket 5 / 6, but that's a little clumsy for my tastes.

It looks like they've raised both prices rather significantly since those two listings first went live; which - as you stated - doesn't make sense vs. simply buying an RG35XX Pro or RG40XX H. Hopefully it's only a temporary hike and comes back down.

a 64 gb memory card is already nearly $20, meaning the console is basically free if you do some "math"

I'm seeing $66 on that rebranded RG40XX H which appears to be about average right now.
I noticed the BatleXP store is offering big discounts with Aliexpress Coins. I just bought one of the RG35XX Pro models for $31 shipped. You have to have a ~$15-$20 coins balance, and they provided and additional one time discount with the first purchase. It still alleges they are offering those big coin discounts, but the additional targeted discount may be per-account. Also, I was not allowed to use coupons.

Currently, it looks like I can get a RG40XX H for:

$74.25
-$8.00 off $50 coupon
-$17.43 Coins
$48.82
State Sales Tax (8.5%) $4.15
$52.97

That's a fair bit lower than Anbernic's listing. I think this is a way for them to offload higher inventory items, while still trying to keep the Anbernic branded appliances closer to full price.
