This 10.1 inch Pastigio digital photo frame stands out as a low cost Android touchscreen for basic photo display and tinkering. The promo code has brought the price down to $29.99 with free shipping, and the discount appears to apply per item. It can run locally with local storage or a segmented network, and that makes it appealing for Home Assistant or kiosk style experiments. The main drawback is the locked down firmware, with reports of no ADB connection and no APK sideloading, so advanced installs and internet connected use raise privacy and security concerns.

I don't see anything in that video regarding this particular product.
You should rewatch the video - it is not about a particular product. It is about the types of products. Basically any device that connects to the internet is a risk but the most risky devices are smart home devices including photo frames, TVs (from any brand including mainstream ones), door locks, thermostats, cameras etc. All these devices are inherently insecure and should be treated as a threat.

I have over a hundred smart devices in my home but I sleep easy at night as my network is segmented where the smart devices cannot access the internet nor my main network. Therefore a device like this poses no risk for me, but for the average user the hacker is waiting for you to connect it.

Even if you've segmented the network, if you don't allow the smart devices to connect to the Internet on that network segment, how are you accessing your smart devices when away from home using their respective device app on the smartphone or tablet? Smart devices completely rely on their ability to be able to talk to their servers which is what the apps communicate to from our smartphones so that the device can be controlled remotely. If your segmented network doesn't allow for internet access, then it also implies that you can't control these devices through their app.

That is correct I would never install any of these untrusted apps on my phone.
All my smart devices are linked to my self hosted home assistant and I only use the home assistant app to control my devices.

I also do not buy (or return) smart devices that do not work without internet. Nowadays there is no excuse to make a smart device require internet.

My plan for this device is to put it on the no internet segment (VLAN) and sideload fully kiosk browser that would display my locally hosted photo slideshow.

The Fxxx code is only good for 33% off now or $20.40 - at least for me. Not worth it.

i bought this to tinker with and try to get HASS etc running on it... You can't really find $30 touchscreen 10" android screens easily. I don't plan to use their native app.

I was thinking the same think. Probably debloat and then see if we can get it to work with HA.

Edit: $30 again and I would bite. $40 with current discount, no thanks.

Seems like they locked down the firmware so even though there is an ADB enable option, I cannot connect to the device. If anyone figures it out let us know otherwise this is going to be returned as defective.

So you can't even sideload apps? That sucks. Reading up on it, I did know that the boot loader is locked but I didn't know that you can't side load apks via adb. That's highly unusual.
