RockAuto is a low-cost source for name brand auto parts, especially when the needed part is hard to find or when closeouts and same warehouse items line up. The 5 percent code can still make a real difference on already cheap parts, and the catalog tools help spot clearance items and avoid extra shipping. Shipping can climb fast across multiple warehouses, and some orders have arrived wrong, damaged, stale, or with fit issues. Customer service is handled online, with mixed experiences on returns and replacements, so it works best when you are not in a hurry.

Common Questions (5)

  • Often yes, especially on name-brand parts where the base price is already low and the 5% discount helps offset shipping. Several examples show delivered RockAuto prices beating AutoZone, local stores, and sometimes Amazon, though it is worth comparing exact part numbers before ordering.

  • RockAuto can issue prepaid return labels and ship replacements quickly when a part is wrong or defective. The practical catch is that there is no phone support, so issues are handled through the online account or email.

  • Keep the order to 1-2 warehouses when possible, because shipping rises fast when items come from multiple warehouses. The cart/catalog shows a little truck for parts that ship from the same warehouse, and splitting the order can sometimes make the total cheaper even after shipping and the 5% discount.

  • Closeouts can be excellent bargains, especially for filters and other consumables, and the closeouts filter can surface clearance items that fit your vehicle. But closeout and warehouse-closeout items can also arrive wrong, missing parts, or be non-returnable, so they need extra inspection.

  • RockAuto may reject checkout for Arizona shipments because of a sales tax dispute, and some parts also cannot be shipped to California. The restriction is not necessarily emissions-related, so it can block otherwise normal orders.

Guys! Checkout the closeout section. I never noticed it till I saw another post mentioning it. I am going to order some parts that don't need immediate replacement but eventually will. Suspension parts mostly.

What automotive parts go stale?
A seasoned police detective once said:

"Believe only half of what you see, and none of what you hear."

I've been ordering from Rock for many years (with a collection of refrigerator magnets to prove it haha), and they've only made one mistake with an order of mine, which was sending the wrong AC refrigerant line. A couple of emails later and they had a prepaid return label and the right line on the way.

Their only real misstep, in my opinion, is not offering free or subsidized shipping on orders over a certain dollar amount, like maybe $100. That one change would bring them a landslide of new customers, even at slightly higher prices to help offset the expense, because consumers have become accustomed to free shipping when buying online.

There is no phone customer service. I ordered exhaust and it did not fit correctly as advertised. I had to figure it out on my own or pay to ship back their mistake. Not doing that again. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) .
Sounds like the same as all the unscrupulous auto shops I have to deal with locally.

No problems with rockauto, although I feel the pain of shipping costs from different Warehouses.

A couple things I'll add here. First is that there is a mega thread for RockAuto discount codes. Just add your code and expiration as a comment to the thread. It's updated pretty frequently by some folks on here, myself included. https://slickdeals.net/f/10993095 Second, I have been wrenching as both a profession and a hobby for about 25 years now, and there are very few things I will go to Oreilly for outside of something urgent. I hear all the folks about the paying for shipping, and how it adds up if parts have to ship from multiple warehouses, but the whole catalog helps you avoid that if you use it. Once you've added a part to the catalog, the rest of the parts that will ship from the same warehouse will have a little truck next to them. If you're adding parts that don't have the little truck, there's going to be additional shipping. And sometimes I will if I'm dead set on getting the OE brand (Denso, Hitachi, etc.) vs just the cheapest. The fact that I can choose is a huge win for me. Lastly, I know it's common to always see "Free Shipping" everywhere these days, but nothing is free. That shopping cost is not being paid by the seller out of the kindness of their hearts, you are paying for it through the margin on the things you buy. RockAuto charging for shipping is because their margin is extremely low, and they would be out of business if they tried to ship everything for free. Almost invariably, the total cost after shipping, tax, and the usual 5% discount is cheaper than Oreilly, AutoZone, Pep Boys, etc.
Thank you for writing this. Absolutely spot on.

Very few issues over 10+ years ordering with Rockauto. Other than occasional shipping damage caused by the lack of proper packaging for heavy items by a lazy warehouse worker or slapping a shipping label directly on the product package, rocakuto shipping is quick and great. Customer service through the online account is always good and prompt at handling issues. I've found Amazon has a pricing war vs Rockauto for some items, so it's worth checking both sites before placing an order. 90% of the time Rockauto has the best deal even with shipping factored in, but sometimes the savings can be substantial on specific items.

Pro tip
locate your car via year, make, model, engine
Then scroll down and select "closeouts"
It will show you everything that's on clearance that fits your vehicle.
Good for stocking up on oil filters, cabin filters, air filters, etc

The problem that i have seen w RA, is that I will select all my crap from one wh, and then add another item that's not. All of a sudden my stuff is split up between 3 wh instead of the two it should be.

As much as I love RA, don't ever let anyone gaslight about that one. I've had that same experience before, and could probably recreate it any time I wanted.

I have no idea why it does that, but ultimately when that's happening, I just end up placing 2 orders so that it's only using the 2 WHs it should be. Kind of annoying to have to do that manually, but it works. No difference in cost since you can reuse discount codes and all that anyway, but still.. annoying.

I'm totally with you on this though. It is very annoying, and has no logic behind it that I can work out.

One of the best places to buy parts aside from relatively high shipping costs sometimes

Rock auto is legit. Shipping lately has been brutal. Also I always take the part number and do a quick search outside rockauto for comps. Sometimes its cheaper when you factor in shipping (unless youre ordering a bunch from the same warehouse)

Well in my case at least the replacement condenser was manufactured in 2017 (no kidding apparently 9 years on the shelf) and did not have caps on the ports. Stale in this case means that the included filter/drier inline with the condenser was exposed to air for that long and likely was saturated with moisture. I kept a 300-500 micron vacuum on it for a week to ensure it was as dry as it could be but in theory that will never really dry out the filter/drier chamber. I was selling the car regardless but if I was keeping it I would have insisted on yet another replacement. That would have been my third for that particular part.

Edgar Allen Poe! I agree with the returns. They have all been good albeit frustrating to have to do when you are trying to get a job done.
