If you want high speed vpn, go with the 7. Otherwise, ax is sufficient.

This one has a much stronger processor, so it depends on what you'll have running on the router itself. For example, encrypting a VPN tunnel: AX is rated for 300mbps Wireguard vs 1100 here, but your internet connection will usually be a bottleneck first. If you're not planning to push your router, AX vs 7 will be almost indistinguishable.

I use my AX for VPN with open Xfinity WiFi hotspots, so plenty fast enough

Thanks. The AX is $60 on Ali atm after coupons. I think I'll try that.

Lol Purchased a travel router about 10 years ago because of a slickdeals deal. Never used it. Threw it out while still had the plastic seal.
I use my AX whenever I travel, and just upgraded to the 7.
Advantages of travel router...
1. Keeps my traffic safe, without the lackluster security some hotels have.
2. All my devices, multiple phones, speaker, tablet, laptop don't need to connect to hotel wifi individually. Boot up the router and all have secure connectivity.
3. Allows me to seamlessly access my home network.

But then, I travel for business and pleasure a lot.
