This step through commuter ebike appears to be a 500W motor with 1000W peak power and a battery under 8 amp hours, so the real draw is short trips and pedal assist rather than long throttle only rides. The bike is widely described as topping out around 20 mph, which fits Class 2 expectations better than the 21.7 mph listing claim. That speed mismatch matters because local access rules can depend on it. Shipping damage is also a concern with low cost ebikes, so added insurance may be worth considering.

Common Questions (5)

  • Class 2 is capped at 750W and 20 mph, so a 21.7 mph claim would not fit Class 2. The bike is also described elsewhere as a 500W motor with 1000W peak and a 20 mph top speed, suggesting the 21.7 mph figure is likely a listing error.

  • The bike is described as a 500W motor with 1000W peak for takeoff and a 7.8Ah battery, not an 8Ah pack. At 374.4Wh, that battery is small enough that runtime depends heavily on how much you pedal versus using throttle only.

  • Full-throttle riding can be around 45 minutes of runtime, while pedal-assist can stretch it to about 1.5 hours. A similar 374.4Wh battery has also been used for roughly 40 miles per charge at pedal-assist level 1 around 17 mph.

  • Shipping insurance is worth considering because inexpensive e-bikes are often cheaply packaged, which raises the chance of shipping damage. That matters more on a low-cost bike where a damaged frame, wheel, or battery can erase the savings.

  • The reported total is $379 plus $90 delivery. That puts the delivered cost at about $469 before any tax or extras.

Per the specs it's a 500W motor with a 1000W peak for takeoff. Most reviewers say it tops out at 20mph, and if it's anything t like the EB-M1, then 20 is accurate. https://manuals.plus/asin/B0DXPRM67J

Be sure to get insurance if it is offered. Cheap ebikes are often cheaply packaged so shipping damage is more likely.

They advertise it as 1000W and 21.7 mph, which would not be a Class 2.

It's literally right there in the link for you to read. I'm not going to split hairs let alone continue on with someone who wants to remain ignorant.

He's referring to the fact that it is 7.8 amp hours instead of 8 amp hours. Amp hours gives you an estimate of how much time of performance you can expect out of a battery. Basically if you were to just use the throttle on this, full blast the entire time, and never pedal, you'd get about 45 minutes of runtime based on the battery's Watt hour rating of 374.4 and the maximum run of the motor at 500 Watts. Again, that's IF you never touch the pedals and you're constantly on the throttle full blast, both unlikely because you'll go down declines when you don't want the throttle on etc. If you put it into pedal assist mode which is far more likely, the run time increases. For instance let's say you only run the motor at 250 watts because you're assisting the motor by pedaling, now you're looking at 1 hour 30 minutes of runtime. I have a battery that's the same watt hours as this, I'm able to get approximately 40 miles per charge while using pedal assist level 1 and averaging about 17 miles per hour. That's the bigger EB-M1 bike too, so this bike may outperform what I have by a little.

Where is a Class 2 bicycle defined as having a top speed of 21.7mph instead of 20mph? Anywhere? It seems really stupid of them to have not capped it 1.7mph slower to keep it a legal bicycle.

The same bike is listed on Amazon with a more legally compliant description "...Funhang electric bike is powered by a robust 500W (1000W peak) high-speed brushless motor, boasting a top speed of 20MPH ...."

I don't think the hardware is different between Alliexpress and Amazon, just different marketing, and one of them made a blunder.

Thank you. That makes sense. Hopefully the blunder is on the Chinese website since it can't be both Class 2 and 21.7mph
Many people think it doesn't matter, but lots of places are enforcing these rules more strictly and whether or not it actually is Class 2 can make the difference between being able to ride somewhere or not.
