The cameras that are going up on every street corner and along the freeways have storage needs. All of your voice conversations that your phone and Alexa devices are constantly recording have storage needs. Keeping track of all of your internet searches, creating databases of your family tree, having accurate and up to date location data on your whereabouts, where you've gone, and who you've visited all has storage needs. The video and photos from your phone and Ring doorbell have storage needs. Etc, etc, etc.

Consumer usage isn't causing the current catastrophe, it's enterprise buildout for perceived demand for agentic AI and similar workloads. If the demand isn't there, they'll eventually forced to stop building it out.
The reality of the situation is this will eventually implode as the hyperscalers see their stocks and balance sheets take a hit due to poor ROI from datacenter buildout. They're all concerned about falling behind each other in this race, trying to convince themselves being the best frontier model will result in the greatest reward, when low-cost, lower demand solutions are slowly, clearly winning. Deepseek and other low-cost models continue to win market share by the day.
The hyperscalers are 90% of this buildout, with hundreds of billions in Capex every quarter collectively. If the ROI isn't there, they'll eventually stop spending. When the hyperscalers stop spending, the demand for NAND and HBM will fall, and balance will return because all cycles eventually do.
