I would try to find a spline tool (or whatever this chainsaw calls for) and adjust the low, high and idle on the carb. Two cycle engines aren't very complicated and on a brand new piece of equipment its not likely anything is clogged, so unless you might have used old gas (or unmixed gas) - carb adjustment is where I would start.
I bought this a year a half ago at the same price to cut down and process 20 or so ash trees. Would definitely definitely recommend it. This thing deserved a permanent spot on the wall after everything I put it through
The TB4218 is a compact gas chainsaw that stands out as a strong value for homeowner cutting, especially when more reach and power are needed than a corded or battery saw can offer. It is described as a Troy-Bilt built by MTD and closely related to the Craftsman 18 inch saw, with praise for easy starting on non ethanol gas, solid performance on yard work, and a surprisingly low price versus $219 to $229 elsewhere. The main cautions are gas saw upkeep, including stale fuel, carb tuning, leaks, and occasional defects or chain issues. It looks like a practical small property saw when weight and price matter.
Homeowners cutting standard yard cleanup, because it starts right up with non-ethanol gas and handles ordinary homeowner tasks well.
People who want a low-maintenance saw for occasional use, because gas engines can sit unused, develop stale fuel problems, and need carburetor attention.
At $98 with free shipping, it is widely viewed as a strong value, especially since similar listings were cited at $219-$229 elsewhere. It is a practical homeowner saw for limbing, bucking, and occasional firewood work, though electric or battery saws are still preferred by some for lighter, infrequent use.
It can start right up and run well with non-ethanol gas and proper chain sharpening, but there are also reports of units starting and then immediately dying or leaking bar oil. If it acts up, carb adjustment and fresh fuel are the first things to check.
Yes, it has been used successfully on larger tasks like processing around 20 ash trees and limbing/bucking a large maple bough. It is still a homeowner saw, so it is better suited to standard yard and firewood work than professional daily use.
The listed weight is about 12.2-12.26 lb on Troy-Bilt and Home Depot, despite one comment quoting 26 lb. For a gas saw, that puts it in a relatively manageable homeowner range.
It is built by MTD and is the same platform as the Craftsman 18-inch saw. That makes parts and design comparisons easier if you already know the Craftsman version.
Teryl Would say the brand (MTD), stands for " Made To Die". Briggs is no longer a American company either. I forget who bought MTD ( Briggs and Scrapthem, Crapsman, tron built, Scrub cdfette ect..) are now chinal companies.. Your not getting a knock off of a Stihl either. What I am trying to say, I would bett anything, this is a couple houndred hour tool at tops.. I lost all faith in MTD years ago.. Plastic cam gears? really?
I bought this deal a few days ago. Went to use the saw and put bar oil, and oil and gas mix. Ran good for about 10 mins and the chain kinked while running, but not actively sawing. Figured it was a cheap chain. I got another chain and the same thing happened. The chain has oil on it. I had to sharpen my old heavy stihl saw from the 1980's to finish cutting some bushes back. I am not sure what the issue is with it, but I have to return it. I don't know if I got a lemon saw or what the deal is. The bottom of the chain links on 4 consecutive ones look like they are ground down. First time I have seen this, but I am not an arborist.....
Taking down a large maple in our backyard, been using a Bauer 16" electric from HF thus far. It's worked fine, but picked this up for a little more capacity and not having to drag a cord around. Used it tonight for the first time, worked great. Limbed and bucked a large bough I dropped the other day, it did all I asked of it. I'm not going to embark on a career as an arborist with it, for what I need it should be fine in the long run. I would suggest using pure-gas.org to find ethanol free fuel to put in it. I put Stabil in each 5 gallon can of small engine gas I get, year round, and Marvel Mystery Oil because it gives me a warm fuzzy. I would consider this a pretty slick deal
Thank you! We live on 10 acres and have been really needing one of these. The last owners sold the best trees and the big machinery that went through the forest weakened many of the young trees. Many have died or are dying and this will be a big help!
this is an excellent deal. these are high quality clones of the zenoah/redmax g3800 japanese chaninsaw. if you are into chainsaw porting these are easy to port and can make quite a bit of power for their size. they use a quad closed port cylinder. the cylinder design is essentially a non strato husky 543xp (also a zenoah/redmax design).

Homeowners cutting standard yard cleanup, because it starts right up with non-ethanol gas and handles ordinary homeowner tasks well.
People trimming and bucking backyard trees, because it has enough capacity to limb and cut a large bough without dragging a cord around.
Firewood cutters who want a lighter saw, because smaller and lighter saws are preferred when they still get the job done.
Tinkerers chasing more power, because it uses a quad closed-port cylinder and can be ported for substantial gains.
People who want a low-maintenance saw for occasional use, because gas engines can sit unused, develop stale fuel problems, and need carburetor attention.
Buyers who need a saw that stays leak-free in storage, because this model can weep bar oil and may leak heavily.
People expecting trouble-free first use, because one unit started then died immediately and another kinked chains after a few minutes.
