These are MTD saws made in china and are copies of Japanese made Komatsu saws from the 80's and 90's. The design is great with several caveats. Please before you put in gas or oil check out the air cleaner. Many chinese air cleaners are in 2 parts that are not air tight. If you seal it with caulking and/or electrical tape that will fill this gap. Sometimes the o-ring (or v-ring in this case) at the air filter connection to the engine has a gap. So coat the inside bottom of the air filter with caulking to seal that imperfection. Some not very legitimate chainsaw shops have voided the warranty do to sawdust entering the carb. Do this and it will prevent it. Mine cut a bunch of wood and developed an air leak. I will be doing a Youtube video on how to fix it since it would cost you more than it is worth to take it to the shop. I first have to finish my orchard pruning and broken pipe due to a 200 lb. root. It is probably an untightened cheap gasket that caused the air leak. Mine is a Craftsman which is made by MTD. Good luck hope you saw lasts you 10 years or more. I am an echo Fanboy but these are capable saws.
Bought this saw last time with low expectations. It's actually an excellent budget saw! I've went through at least a cord of wood so far and she does it with ease. We shall see about longevity, but so far I'm very happy with my purchase. I will say though, if you're unfamiliar with chainsaws, make sure you do your research. Theres more to them than you might think. They are definitely dangerous, especially if used improperly. Be safe, be smart!

Gas ones are useful after a storm that downs trees and you've lost electricity.
Exactly.
TBH - bigger fan of battery operated chainsaws mainly, b/c of portability, quieter operation, less maintenance on an electrical motor. But, after a hurricane or the event of a natural disaster, all of that becomes a liability and gas FTW.

A small $300 inverter generator remedies all of those issues. If you're in the market for a chainsaw to use after power impacting storms, a generator should be on your buy list before a saw.

Fortunately, this SD sidesteps that process and uses fuel directly to power the chainsaw versus requiring an intermediary device (generator). The point you're making doesn't sound very energy efficient.
