The TB4218 is a compact gas chainsaw that stands out as a strong value for homeowner cutting, especially when more reach and power are needed than a corded or battery saw can offer. It is described as a Troy-Bilt built by MTD and closely related to the Craftsman 18 inch saw, with praise for easy starting on non ethanol gas, solid performance on yard work, and a surprisingly low price versus $219 to $229 elsewhere. The main cautions are gas saw upkeep, including stale fuel, carb tuning, leaks, and occasional defects or chain issues. It looks like a practical small property saw when weight and price matter.

  • Gas chainsaws can be a hassle if they sit unused with bad gas, because small-engine maintenance may be needed later.

  • A brand-new unit can start and then immediately die, suggesting a possible defect.

  • The chainsaw can leak heavily, even when it otherwise feels solid.

  • The chain can kink after about ten minutes of use, and the issue can repeat after replacing the chain.

Bought 1. Did I need it? No, I already have a Makita pro saw 64cc but it's heavy and leaks. I have a never-opened Husqvarna Rancher, and a Green Works electric 2.5Ah. I cut firewood every year and the lighter and smaller saws are always preferred if they get the job done.

Well, I rarely need a chainsaw. And I've never needed a gas chainsaw. But now I own one.

makita dcs 6401 or 6400? you can get the piston and cylinder from a makita 7901 (79cc) and bolt it on to your saw for an upgrade in power. its a direct bolt on.
