These, along with the spinning reel variant, are decent. The spinning reel has 9 bearings! Well worth 10 bucks. They were previously branded as Quantum reels, which now provides only higher-end saltwater rods & reels.

FYI to those who do not know reels that well...Baitcasters are notoriously difficult to learn and can tangle easily.

Good to know. What type of reel would you recommend to a newbie? Fresh and saltwater. Thanks!

At $10 it's a cheap entry into learning about bait casters though. If you hate it you're out $10.

Downside is if the reel is inherently bad, then a poor product is what turned you away from a potential hobby you'd have loved.

Fishing equipment is incredibly vast and depends on what species you're looking to catch and what types of bodies of water you're going to be fishing. For instance, are you going to be on a boat, or shoreline fishing?

Probably the open face Find_A_Deal linked earlier

https://www.dickssportinggoods.co...trs30spvxk

Open face reels are much easier to learn than baitcasters. Push button spincast reels are even easier but the open face is what most people use these days so they're good to learn.

I don't know about that. It's like a tool. Buy a cheap one, and if you use it enough to wear it out then buy a nice one next time.

I've used some really poor quality baitcaster reels over the years and they are much more finicky and difficult to learn vs. better ones in my opinion. I have no opinion regarding the quality of this reel, though.

Lower-priced baitcaster like this typically offers magnetic braking system only. Magnetic braking works most effectively when the spool speed is low, in other words, at the end of the casting when the lure is hitting the water. There is another type, centrifugal braking system that works best when the spool speed is high, i.e. at the beginning of the cast. A seasoned fisherman has learned to finger feather the spool during the beginning of the casting of a magnetic braking reel, and similarly, to finger brake at the end of the casting of a centrifugal braking reel.

For a beginner to start learning, the easiest way is to buy a reel with DUAL braking, which will significantly cut down the learning curve.

There is also digital control braking system, which, IMHO is not worth the premium price tag.
