In the U.S., 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi has 11 channels, but only channels 1, 6, and 11 are generally considered non-overlapping. If your router is fixed to a crowded channel, or if many nearby networks are using overlapping channels, your wireless performance will suffer.
I've used a Wi-Fi analyzer app on my phone before to check nearby networks and see which channels were congested. Switching to the 5 GHz band will normally eliminate this problem because it has way more available channels and is usually less crowded, though it has shorter range and weaker wall penetration than 2.4 GHz. 🤷 Also, some older or simpler devices still only support 2.4 GHz, so it is useful to know about this issue.
