No, the filter would not work that way.
Why not? If it places a filter completely between air flow and he tapes it off or even folds the extra over to cover and area that could allow air to pass without being filtered it should do the job. It's not conventional

Anywhere out there an update on MERV? These are the ones I've always purchased but some people have told me that MERV8 the better for the life of the furnace
MERV 11 is widely considered equally safe as MERV 8 for most HVAC systems. Once you get to MERV 13 or higher, that's when there is noticeably more strain on the system. Check Google or try AI research to confirm what is suitable for your specific HVAC system.

I use the merv 14 filtrate 2500 from Costco, usually 4 pack for $30. Wondering if I should switch 🤷 ♂️

Worried about the higher MERV being a bottleneck for 1 inch thickness filter.

Great deal. I change mine monthly since the HVAC is the basement near open earth area.

You know you've entered adulthood when you get excited about HVAC filters going on sale.

Thanks, OP! Been needing to pick some up and this was the nudge I needed.

I would go with Merv 8 instead which is much safer for the furnace....price is good though.

I did a little research yesterday on MERV because I was confused about which to buy. MERV 5-8 is considered "standard" filtration along the lines of office buildings, with MERV 8 generally recommended for most uses. MERV 11, here, is going to be a bit better for those with allergies or sensitivities to particulates, which applies in my household. With all the pollen floating around lately, I figure the higher MERV will help some, but it's not toward the more extreme ratings. Plus, at this price, why not?

Of course, because I just ordered generic filters from HD yesterday! Very good deal on name brand filters. I couldn't find anything remotely as good yesterday.
For regular use I always get the MERV7 from Menards, 4pack 16x25x1 always $10 before their rebate, free shipping to store and pick up. If deal like this Filtrete one drops then grab as extra for pollen season.

I use 16 x 20. Can I just tape off the extra 5 inches and use these? I know it will slide just fine into the opening.
no you can't

Wirecutter did airflow testing on aprilaire's line and found the 13s had very slightly better airflow than the 11s which has confused me. I don't know if this is explained by their testing method (like maybe they tested unused filters and this becomes more restrictive once in use for a little while?). I probably should just follow the standard advice on this but I grabbed 13s / 1900 after reading.
