The HD 600 is a classic open back headphone known for neutral, revealing sound and a spacious, speaker like presentation that works well for music, mixing, and gaming. The tuning is not bass heavy, so vocals and midrange stand out, and the imaging can make instruments and enemy positions easy to place. It also has a long reputation for lasting well, with replaceable parts and strong support for amp pairings, especially tube amps. The main caveat is power, since it benefits from a capable amplifier, and the open design will not block room noise.
Listeners who want a neutral, mid-forward headphone for critical listening because it stays revealing and sounds right with a capable amplifier.
Gamers who need precise positional cues because the open-back design creates a spacious soundstage that makes left-right-behind placement easy to hear.
They can play from a phone, interface, or other device, but they really wake up with a capable amp. The 300-ohm impedance means more power helps, and tube amps or balanced amp setups are specifically recommended for best sound.
The HD 600 is tuned very neutrally rather than as a bass-heavy or V-shaped headphone. It can sound mid-forward and has less bass and soundstage than some higher-end models, which is why it is often favored for critical listening and mixing.
The open-back design creates a wider, more room-like soundstage that makes instrument placement easier to pinpoint in 3D space. That same spatial presentation is useful in games for locating sounds like enemies to the left, right, or behind you.
Yes. The HD 600 uses resin-polymer construction, and every part can reportedly be replaced without tools because Sennheiser sells replacement parts. That makes it easier to keep them going long term.
The HD 600 is generally described as the more neutral option, while the HD 650 and HD 6XX are the alternatives some people compare against. In direct A/B listening, the HD 600 was preferred for its more neutral tuning.
I was always interested in these and the HD650s, and got lucky to A/B them a few years back and decided that the HD600 was more of my speed. I never could justify $300+ (at the time), then comes the HD6XX which filled the void, then the $99 price mistake. It was an instant buy.
I enjoy the HD600s over the 650 and 6XX because, to me, they are more neutral. They fit well next to my DT880s, M1060, and D2000s.
I think this is the lowest I have seen for HD 600s.
I don't need it, I don't need it...
Just bought some Beyer Dynamics DT 770 Pro Xs for recording, but saw Beyer also has the DT990 Pro X for mixing and critical listening (open back). Those are $229, but these are seriously tempting.

I've had my HD600's for about 10 years and still fantastic cans, but do require an amp for the best sound. I paid $255 back then and thought that was a great deal. Along with my HD800S, 2x HD620S, HD598, 2x HD598CS...I've got some great sound. And I just gave away some HD598SE's.

The HD 600 can require a lot more power because of its high 300/600-ohm class impedance.

Customer support price-matching can be difficult because chat access and call-backs may fail.
The HD 600's sound can be limited by weak bass and a narrower soundstage compared with some higher-end models.
