If you don't need energy monitoring, there are other models that costs similar that are new (search for "smart plug")

Of course, but the energy monitoring is an excellent feature and a huge perk.

These are the ones I use. A little bulky compared to others but they seem to work more consistently.

If it matters, these are not the matter enabled plugs. I almost purchased until it didn't show that I had last purchased on the product page since my others which look identical are matter enabled. Those are currently $28 new for the 4 pack with energy monitoring. ISBN B0DKG52WQ4

ASIN, not ISBN (= International Standard Book Number).

These work very well. Have had two of them for four years with no problems.

Matter is just a broader integration system for this type of stuff? If I really don't plan to get into a broader smart home setup and just need to control a couple devices while I'm away from home will that matter/be worth it?

Matter is really if you want to be able to connect it directly to another system like Apple, Alexa, Smartthings, Google Home, if you only care about being able to control a few devices all from the same company, you don't really need Matter.

I have Home Assistant so having local control with something like Matter, is a 100% required feature. I want everything controlled locally.

We have dozens of Kasa devices. These energy monitoring outlets seem to be more reliable than the standard or compact outlets, which are definitely more reliable than the standard single pole switches. 3-way and dimming switches seem to be much better.

If (when?) TP-Link stops supporting Kasa devices we're going to have a lot of eWaste. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Ah OK, I didn't realize that and local only is important to me with this stuff as well. See the Kasa ones have an integration but also that some folks have had issues with it so I assume the Matter are the safer way to go then.

I'm relatively new to HA but I have my Kasa devices in HA using the HA integration so can run everything locally without any internet. If you have HA and don't need Kasa compatibility with other systems, is there any benefit of being Matter compatible?

Word of caution. This thing don't last too long. I purchased a bunch (3 or so pkgs at diff times) like a year ago and half of them have failed. I initiated a claim directly with the company regarding the ones that failed firs it was 2-3 and they replaced them, you must pay the shipping cost and the claim process is so slow it takes weeks and they request videos and evidence, but like a month later more started failing. At this point I am just letting them fail, also shipping cost made it not worth the process it was almost near as purchasing them directly on Amazon. Reason why I am just letting them fail. No interested in this product in particular. Other kasa products have been good so far for me.

You can control these within HA as well, it's just not fully local.
