Assuming your question is legit, no knife is good for self defense. You would have to close with an attacker to use it when your objective should be to create distance and escape the attack. Knives can be good "get off me" slashing or poking weapons after someone has already grabbed you, but its better to carry pepper spray, a stick or cane so you can wacky someone and run before they are close enough to put hands on you.

Have you used it much? If yes, how is the edge retention?
The knife is made from 8cr13MoV stainless steel, should get very sharp, hold it's edge through a decent amount of use, but not too awfully long. It's a very corrosion resistant budget steel that offers good bang for the buck, but you can always pay more to get more. A recent knife steel article[bladehq.com] rated it 3/10 in edge retention, 6/10 in toughness, 8/10 for coorosion resistance and 7/10 for ease of sharpening. One of the better budget stainless steels that will serve the average knife user quite well. I own several knives in this steel and like it when it gets a decent heat treatment, which Cold Steel generally does (though nothing like what Spyderco gets out of this humble steel in it's budget Byrd line.)
