For the first time in my life, I've seen Apple TV snapped up just like toilet paper and bottled water. People are frantically buying things they don't actually need, driven solely by fear of the future.
You're on Slickdeals though. Can't judge the psychology of "buy now, think later"🤣
I got one from Target. My reasoning was that the effective price as of yesterday is $250 due to the price raise, so the MSRP $150 ones are effectively $100 off. That's actually a pretty good discount for an Apple product.
Prices may eventually settle down, but given how GPU pricing has been last few generations, I wouldn't bet on that happening within 3 years. The "coming soon" model is likely even more expensive. Although I'll be kicking myself if they drop a killer feature.
If you have no need for an Apple TV within 3 years or you already have one, then by all means wait.

Apple raised prices on a bunch of things today, including the Apple TV, yesterday's price $129 and $149, now $199 and $249. Being able to buy them at yesterday's prices suddenly becomes very desirable. "Get it while you can", FOMO, etc.

People are being overly snarky on this. The hypemasters have been saying the new AppleTV has been coming out for years now. So people have naturally been waiting. And it keeps getting delayed and delayed. Rumor is because AI features aren't good enough yet. That's mainly what the new device is going to be marketed as. AI... AI... AI. So it's perfectly reasonable for people to say "F it, let me get the older model before the awful new price kicks in. I don't need AI in my Apple TV anyway."

I'll certainly be curious to see what improvements there might be in an ATV refresh; my pessimism tends to suggest that it's more likely to be "features I'm not interested in" (like AI) rather than "features I want" (like bitstream audio passthrough). That said, the ATV refresh feels a lot like the Nvidia Shield refresh, "surely soon, don't buy now it's right around the corner, etc".

I've been realizing how many times in the last few years we've had to manage scarcity situations and the related price/availability effects. Covid, clorox wipes, toilet paper, etc. Tariffs, sudden price increases on anything from overseas (and how much we get used to cheap consumer items from China). Last fall, PC blu ray drives stop being made and everything going expensive and hard to get. Later last fall, memory prices, then ssd prices, then hard drive prices and availability. This year, Iran war, gasoline and anything made from petroleum. This week, sure, apple tv, more continuation of the same.
Do you remember COVID cars?

That's the whole thing. If the next ATV had a current Ax chip rather than the retread it usually gets and quality A/V updates it might totally be worth $100 extra over the current top of the line. But I have zero interest paying $100 for the same box with slightly updated Ax and a tad more RAM and "smarter" Siri.

Cynical me wonders if Apple is raising the price to lower it, ie., give retailers more room to have sales at the old price. $100 off looks enticing to people that don't know the history here.

It can't play all games since they don't want most iOS games on it, you'll still need to get a controller. Plus, you need the developer wanting to add Apple TV compatibility. The one game I was surprised was compatible was Chrono Trigger lol. But almost everything on Apple Arcade is compatible, and the weirdest game that's actually great is Sneaky Sasquatch lol

I knew what they would do this so I ordered mine from Sam's yesterday as soon as I heard about the increase. Picked it up at noon today. The girl said we've been passing off a lot of those today. I told it's because people ordered them before the price increase of $100 and she it's $100 cheaper and I said it was yesterday they increased the price by $100. Her mouth dropped open.

These things have flash based memory and I know it's gone up but not this much. I believe the ATV saw the biggest increase percentage wise which is ridiculous. It's replacing my 2017 4K model with the all black Siri Remote. I'll move the old one to another room because it still does the job but it's no longer upgradable for new OS's according to everyman dot com. Been waiting for 2 years for a new model and it'll probably hit this Fall but I'll be da..ed if I'm paying $250 for one.

Download and pay lifetime $95 fee for Infuse Pro. OMG it's so worth it. The best apple tv media player, hands down. Plus you can avoid using Plex altogether if you setup your server with Tailscale! You can access your network locally from anywhere and stream via SMB!
I second this, infuse is much better if you have a plex server and even if you don't it's worth it

I still don't get the purpose of this and Chromecast now unless you have an older TV. Most now have airplay and Chromecast built in along with apps

A reliable and consistent UI that will last for like a decade. Smart TVs have a problem where they slow way down after 2 years. This helps to remove the desire to replace a TV after every 2-4 years.
