Murakami's books are decent, and they speak to the culture in Japan. But they all have incel vibes. They all deal with a lonely/isolated/misunderstood male protagonist, and most of the women could be described as manic pixie characters who come into their lives for the sole purpose of growth of the male lead. He writes what he knows, and he is an aging Japanese man.

Damn, I was just making a Beatles reference but I appreciate the thoughtful reply. That's interesting, is it a throughline of several Murakami works or just this one? Because your description fits the song to a T, although its lyrics were clearly sardonic

I think his books are wonderful yet, I have not read this one yet. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is my favorite, and it was so interesting and quite different from anything I have ever read!

Norwegian Wood is an easily digestible bildungsroman that is suitable for young adults minus some erotic scenes.
