So the console came in the mail today. Was supposed to be excellent condition. No original box, or the sleeve, no manuals, no original cords. The ps5 was just in a cardboard box with no peanuts or protection around it, just some bubble wrap not even taped aroung the console so was loose and it had room to bounce around in there. The controller was in a zip lock bag with a nintendo USB C cable, and old hdmi cable that's not even 2.1. The console had sticky goo on one panel with some residue of a sticker that must of been on it. The panels were not fully attached with some damage to the attachments points. Can hear something when I move it side to side and there is a funky smell coming from everything, like some perfume. Will turn it on and see, might return it, not really happy for an excellent condition.
I spent an 1 hr in chat with a best buy agent only to have them say I could buy the new one for $579 (slim digital) or an open box (slim digital) for $616. What the heck is going on with ps5 pricing ?! They said any under $500 open box were literally unavailable and if I see that it means they have none in stock in the whole country!

Would return.
I swear soooo many best buy employees just don't care. This was an $800 4K 27" OLED that they didn't put bubble wrap on the sides and used a box way too large.
I didn't even open it and took it to the store for a return. The manager ended up apologizing and just swapped it for a new one in store.

I got one of those shipped across country. TV was bent and screen cracked.

If you are going to throw the dice and keep it or even if you choose to return it (my preferred choice), make sure to photograph and document everything. Get videos as well. For instance the sound when you move it side to side.
I honestly don't know if it's better to find one or to search endlessly at this point. BB is really looking bad on this one, but sadly we know it won't effect their bottom line, or cause a fervor of change to for the benefit of the customers. It just a few of us who know.

So I get 15 days return window, that should be without any photo or video proof. If I keep it past that its on me, and the evidence wont matter at that point.
So I got a bit technical and took every panel off, cleaned up the smell and gunk, cant do anything about the scratches but those are hard to see anyway unless in sunlight. Then inside I found a plastic piece (I suspect this the sound I heard) sitting in one of the attachment holes and carefully took it out. Then I saw where it broke off from, probably during shipping, it was from the hard drive attachment holes, one hole had semi broken tab. I inspected everything I could, fan looked good condition, heatsink was clean, exhaust ports decent. So I decided to put everything back and turn it on. As soon as I plugged it in and hit the power button, blue light comes on, then few seconds later goes off without any reason, now I dont know what that was about so will mess with it again when back home.

So the excellent condition open box ps5 does not work. It has some hardware issue. Everytime I press play game, within seconds it shuts down, tried it more than 5 times. Its going back.

I would be very careful to the point of maybe taking down this deal. I don't want to assume too much but... I went to store to pick mine up. fed-ex box shipped to store no console box no original usb/c cable NINTENDO as well hdmi cable left stick drift and system error - by definition not excellent. No instructions, stand, feet, box. It worked (technically) but sometimes I have to turn right you know? (First experience with bad open box at Best Buy and stick drift actually!) got a disc drive / they took it all back and I got a good condition disc slim that did not have the deal but whatever (less than 600 still) I just wanted to get it taken care of. Icing on the cake is they offered me another 'excellent' ps5 in a nondescript box that looked exactly the same from outside. Just be careful if you do this deal and test the console out and return in 15 days (I believe) - sorry long post but the Nintendo cables similarity (mine was the hdmi) and other console that was there in the same blank cardboard box is wild. (Also I did save all the stickers just in case - looks like it was upgrade from good to excellent within the past couple days for some reason) - the console I kept was inspected in store and had the seal of Best Buy inspected on it. With the actual box. No issues thus far and not bad condition (no cockroaches!) able to connect and controller is fine . But the good condition slim with drive I would not call the deal.

I had to exchange and then my 'good' condition slim with disc was just under 600. I checked the site and indeed price was right (thought I was overcharged at first)

I think both the rise of the console prices, the digital gta preorder, and Sony announcing all digital might also be making retailers scramble on how to price current inventory? Just a crazy situation
Waiting for disc drive to go on sale! Not happening I guess....
I bought a 'good' slim disc ... it was not a great deal, confirmed. haha (easier for me to have 4k player and tv console in one for the moment) / physical 4ks (and vinyls) still going pretty ok it seems.
Yeah I returned it, best buy rep was trying to echange it for another open box digital model when he was running it through his system he said there was price difference and i had to pay like 200 more. I was like no thanks give me my refund instead lol, he tried saying the listing I bought was actually for a original because it qas through a third party and not them even though everything from the pictures to the title and description mentioned the playstation slim digital edition and i literally bought for pickup and was ready the same day its not like some third party seller shipped it to my house lol. Nevertheless lesson learned, always check open box stuff in store.
should have taken all these comments to heart but thanks all this has been really helpful and really matches my own experience I had
