This refurb HP OmniDesk looks strongest as a parts bundle, with a Ryzen 7 8700G, 32GB of DDR5, and a 1TB SSD making the price feel reasonable on current component costs. The 8700G is described as a solid general purpose chip that can handle gaming, and the system is seen as better than many mini PCs. The main drawbacks are the proprietary 180W power supply, limited case space, and missing SATA headers or internal drive room, which make upgrades and storage expansion awkward. It is a decent value if the included CPU, memory, and SSD are what matter most.

  • The included 1TB SSD and 32GB DDR5 can make the bundle pricing feel more reasonable than buying components separately.

  • The Ryzen 7 8700G can serve as a strong general-purpose CPU for gaming and everyday use.

  • The platform can support an upgrade path by swapping in a compatible 500W PSU and adding a small form-factor GPU later.

  • The CPU and storage pricing context suggests the deal can function as a parts bundle for building a custom system.

  • The desktop's proprietary 180W stock power supply and limited case space can restrict future upgrades.

  • The motherboard may not provide SATA ports or SATA headers, which can block common home server and file storage setups.

  • The system may lack internal storage expansion options, including no internal slot for adding another hard drive.

  • The refurbished build quality has been criticized as low level, and the price may be considered too high for that condition.

32GB ram even if it's 5200mhz and the 1 TB SSD alone is easily $400.
And the Ryzen cpu sells for $273 on Newegg:
https://www.newegg.com/amd-ryzen-...6819113811

So... buy this for the ram, cpu, and SSD.

Buy a new case, motherboard, and power supply.

You'll be about $100 ahead of buying the ram, cpu, and SSD via normal means.

Kinda crazy, but the ram apocalypse can make one look for alternative methods.

No sata ports on the board? Only one nvme slot? Or both? I've been looking for a lower cost system to run a light home server for a bunch file storage and some lower load services. The price of this seems like it could fit the bill vs even the lower cost bundles from microcenter, but I neeed a few sata ports.
I can't find internal pictures. But other HP mini towers like this had space for a single 2.5" drive mount.
For this price you can get a NAS while will support multiple drives and sip power and made to be run 24/7.
4 bay - 16GB RAM - Intel N150 - $520 - https://www.amazon.com/TERRAMASTE...0FLHTF2PQ/

4 bay - 8GB RAM - Intel Pentium Gold 8505 - $584 - https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-DXP...0D22JRHZB/
All of these have upgradable RAM and NVME slots you can use.

You can get a 500W compatible power [ebay.com] supply for about $40... add a small form-factor video card (RTX 5060/5070 or RX 9060/9070) and you've got a credible gaming PC... swap the CPU for an x3d chip later if needed...
So this eBay power supply would work HP OmniDesk desktop then? Any other recommendations for new one?

hahaha this reads like "you can swap out nearly every component and end up with a good PC".

Do people commonly buy a pre-built to swap the CPU? I figure if they're doing that, they would just build the whole thing.

RAM and storage prices have skyrocketed in the past year. Like someone else said, those alone are probably worth $400+. And this is a very good CPU in general too. It's not optimized for gaming like an X3D Ryzen would be. But it would still work great for gaming in general. The CPU swap was just making note of an option the user has later down the line.

I've got too many computers and components already (kids and a home lab), and I need to stop looking at deal threads like this. But this deal piqued my interest. I'd legitimately consider jumping on this deal with the plan being to immediately dispose of the case and power supply. It's a reasonable way to spend money on non-DDR4 hardware for a change.
