I don't know if it's because I have an active subscription for audible but it is not free unless I'm going to use my monthly credit. Thanks anyway.

Same here, but I don't have an actual credit to use myself. I accidentally got the basic membership via another slick deal. Missed out on the $20 credit and now some free audiobooks.

Is anyone actually able to get all three of these free just with a Prime membership? I do not have an active Audible sub, but all three volumes only show as $0.00 in combination with setting up a subscription to Audible. But after you buy one volume, don't you then have an active Audible membership and thus couldn't get the other two volumes without using Audible monthly credits?

Edit: If I step through the process on one of these, on the order confirmation page underneath the book it says "Listen with membership", so it doesn't seem that you're getting the book for free at all--you're just getting access to listen to it (and anything else in Audible's library) during the 3 month trial.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't look like this is a deal for anything other than the 3-month trial offer.

My only opinion on this audible deal is this deal sucks, and audible sucks even worse.

However, I definitely have something to say on the books! I have the hardcover, softcover, and audiobook versions of this series. And it is fantastic. Despite its prodigious length, it is infinitely readable and the narrative style quite enjoyable. Fwiw, the criticism that Foote, as a "southerner", is overly "sympathetic" to confederate perspectives, is way overblown. Such a claim could only be made by someone inculcated in the whitewashed (pun intended) myths many of us were taught in high school, which painted all confederates as bloodthirsty white supremacists, and all unionists as free-thinking liberal abolitionists. The truth is necessarily much more nuanced than that. And even if this work is not perfect, I actually found it relatively balanced and rightly regarded as a comprehensive and scholarly work. It is a critical part of my civil war literary collection.

I don't really understand it either. If it was just listen for free, I'd expect to see it in the plus catalog in my membership. I guess this might be some kind of new sign up bonus where you get something specific for free instead of a credit? And it looks like it's only "standard" "ownership" where you have to maintain a sub to keep access vs "plus" where you can listen to your purchases after your membership lapses. I dunno. Disappointing at any rate.

If you're talking about Shelby's voice, it is like honey on cornbread. Unfortunately he doesn't narrate these. Grover Gardner is the narrator, and while he is a good narrator in his own right, but he's not Shelby Foote.
