My understanding is you don't need software but you can also only set the buttons to preset choices, I can't remember how many but not gut is saying sixteen and that they were all tied to specific functions rather than keys.

Seems like this one has the same issue with my Logitech "multiple devices."

I have to turn the mouse over to switch devices. So if I have work pc and laptop up, there is no intuitive button to flip devices. It requires me to pick it up and hit the underside

Pairing with up to 4 devices is actually the standout feature here. That's surprisingly useful if you switch between a work laptop, personal PC and tablet.

The OLED screen seems kinda silly though it does seem a bit useful if you want to set the keys to the various presets without using software or some weird series of button presses you'll never remember if you lose the manual.

I'd probably give this a try if the device switch button wasn't on the bottom (that's the main/only reason I want an alternative to the MX Master).

The buttons aren't programmable, they allow you to select between 16 presets. They note that options 6-13 are not supported on macOS.

1. Left
2. Right
3. Middle key
4. Forward
5. Backward
6. Show Desktop
7. Switch window
8. Lock PC
9. Calculator
10. Explorer
11. Cut
12. Copy
13. Paste
14. Volume up
15. Volume down
16. Play/pause.

So it can eventually play Doom directly on the mouse

What is so difficult for doing that?

I read the critical reviews because I've been burned by unknown mouse models before, and someone [amazon.com] mentioned that this is a rebrand of the JLAB Epic Mouse [a.co] but with improved internals like a higher DPI. It certainly looks cool and has some neat features, but I'm not sure about the build quality based on the reviews. I've purchased a few cheap ergonomic mice from Amazon and some of them suck at basic functions like consistently registering button clicks and scrolling smoothly, so I'm more discerning now and check the reviews to ensure there aren't too many complaints about basic stuff like that.
