Available from:About this title:
Here is the first book in the landmark series that has redefined imaginative fiction and become a modern masterpiece.
In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the North of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

You can start this series but it will never be finished. Author doesn't want to finish the 6th book and won't let someone else write it after HBO butchered the series finale.

First book is one of the greatest fantasy books ever written. The series goes downhill after that.

So how does the book read? Let me elaborate: if I were to recommend a book to someone who loves reading, but doesn't watch tv or pay attention to popular culture and their reading habits usually don't have smut. Would the book read like smut? I know there is plenty of non smut aspects in the series, I just don't wanna say to grandma I got you an ebook I heard it's great .... and even better it's got plenty of gratuitous incest in graphic detail...

Probably not a book for grandma if sex is something she can't read about

Agreed. Storm of Swords (number 3 I think) is my favorite of the series.

Yup, first 3 books are amazing. While it is a great beginning, why start a series when it's never going to be completed?

First book is not even the best in the series

I found the series hard to read as the descriptions and prose felt dense.

But I did also find Tolkien unnecessarily dense.

Regardless of readability, I will say both authors are crazy amazing world builders.

Choppy and fragmented. I found it difficult to fully track his writing style at first. I went on to later regard this series as among the best ever written.

George RR Martin was part of the HBO crew and was a producer on the show. I doubt any TV show story decisions didn't get his approval. I believe he's said he knows how it ends, but I have a feeling the HBO ending is at least one of the endings he's considered. It may be the ending of his books and now that it's been badly received, he's trying to come up with another. Whatever, I've given up a long time on the series.

Maybe if I buy this, I'll finally finish reading it (barely 1/3rd of the way after buying the paperback ten years or so ago).
