If you're the type to never roll over, this pillow will be perfect for you. If you're a normal human being that occasionally tosses and turns, you're going to hate this pillow. My wife has back/neck pains so we have a lot of experience with different styles of pillows. One of her big complaints with fancy shaped pillows like this was she'd end up without it in the middle of the night, laying to the side of it. Also, forget using it for literally anything else. We watch shows/movies before bed and prop ourselves up with our pillow. These special shapes are unusable for that. Lastly, you need a pillow case, which makes pillows like this that much more awkward. This one has a removable cover, but you're not going to want to unzip and wash over and over.
We settled on a 100% latex pillow for her. She loves it for all of the above. I describe it as "fast" memory foam and much like a trampoline for your head. Very bouncy. Basically, your head sinks inside the perfect amount. The heavier the head, the more it pushes through (and resists) giving you the perfect resistance. I highly recommend going that direction if you are in the same boat. At least try it and return if you hate it.

I recently started sleeping on my back - I've got a CPAP, and figured since it keeps me breathing all night, it should be safe to sleep on my back now, and maybe if I'm on my back, the mask will stay in place better (I don't have a lot of problems with it staying in place when I sleep on my side, but sometimes it does get moved off-center) - and I find when I sleep on my back, I don't toss and turn AT ALL.
Not disagreeing with anything you said, just sharing a tidbit about my sleep experience.
I use a pillow like this when I plan to sleep on my back (nights when I use my cpap), and I have a different tempurpedic pillow I use when I sleep on my side/stomach that was designed with 1 side for back-sleeping, and 1 side for side/stomach sleeping. I dig it.

You can choose how firm you want it. Medium is what I went with and it seems perfect.
