We've been buying them for several years and haven't had any major issues using them at Acme. They worked unreliably at regular registers (and not at all at self-checkout), but we just had to have the cashier suspend the order and we were able to pay with the digital GC at customer service. A few months ago they added it to the self-checkout though, so it all works smoothly at our local Acme now.

Up until a few months ago, they weren't usable at self-checkout at our local Acme. We always had to have them suspend the order and then we paid at customer service. Since then though, they have added it to self-checkout and you just select "Scan to Pay."

At least with Safeway, but possibly others since it's all the same really...

Loading a gift card to your account in the app locks the gift card to online/app purchases only. You literally can't use the gift card on your account at the store in person. Can't through the app and can't with the actual gift card. It's locked to app/online purchases only.

I found this out after the employee at the store told me to put the gift card in the app to make it easier! Next day I had a meeting with the store manager and some customer support supervisor and the store manager flat out admitted that they had no clue the gift card would be locked to online/app purchases only, they thought it be transferred my safeway account to use at any time.

After that the store manager worked with me. We made an app/online order as close as we could to $100. Once the charge was confirmed, he issued a refund in cash for the purchase.

After you hit Scan to Pay, pick up the hand scanner on side and scan the paper eGift card. I have no problem with it but some store's self-checkout does not have the hand scanner so you can't use it at self-checkout.

Albertsons revamped their register system recently. Now you can use the QR code on Albertson's GC at Self-Checkout (good at all the Albertson's family of stores -- I use at Safeway Norcal). At payment method, you choose the 'scan to pay' or something like that for payment method. The SCO has to have a scanner gun -- if it doesn't go to one that does or have the SCO woman suspend the transaction & take you to her/his register to finish checking you out there. Usually you scan the QR code with the scanner gun, then enter your pin, and viola -- seamless now at SCO. So SCO works, though I have always successfully checkout using the eGC at a manned register. Some checkers know how to do it, some ask for help or muddle their way thru (reading the directions) -- but always successful.

WARNING: DO NOT USE AN eGC OR GC for ONLINE/APP PURCHASES, OR ADD IT TO YOUR ACCOUNT! If you do, the totality of the eGC or GC money (not just the $ you used from the eGC for your purchase) will be added to your account for ONLINE/APP ORDERS ONLY. They will drain the eGC/GC and put the balance as online/app order credit, so your eGC (that had a $100) will have 0 on it. There is no way to reverse this, says Albertson's. I learned the hard way.

Just a precaution that BestBuy has a very weak security to keep your digital GC secure. 18 months ago my digital Amazon gift card was stolen from their server 3 weeks after I bought it. It took me 2 months and many hours calling BestBuy and Amazon and submitting all documents before having the charge disputed with Chase Visa card. Since then, I always loaded digital gift cards bought from Bestbuy.com to my account immediately. For this Albertson GC, if you load it to your account, you can only use it for online purchases, not in store anymore.
