This GarveeHome 12,000 BTU mini split is a budget heat pump that stands out for strong cooling, quiet operation, and lower power use than window or portable units. Real-world installs describe easy DIY setup for handy owners, with precharged condenser refrigerant, preflared lines, and heating that can hold up well in cold weather. The main drawbacks are the lack of WiFi on this model, the need for vacuuming and careful electrical work, and some concern about shipping damage or early failures. It looks like a solid value if you are comfortable with the install.

Common Questions (5)

  • At minimum, commenters mention a vacuum pump, 410A adapters or hoses, and basic hand tools; some also recommend a vacuum gauge, Nylog Blue, and a torque wrench for better flare connections. Several note that the condenser is pre-charged, but the lines still need to be evacuated before refrigerant is released.

  • Yes, it should be wired on a dedicated circuit, and the 115V version still needs the correct breaker and wire size. Comments mention using two breaker slots for 220V models, and one user warns that some 115V units have a surprisingly high minimum circuit ampacity, so checking the nameplate before wiring is important.

  • It is more efficient than a typical window unit and much quieter in the room, while also providing heat because it is a heat pump. The main tradeoff is the install work, but users describe lower power draw, better sealing, and no need to remove it seasonally.

  • It does not appear to include Wi‑Fi on this model. App-based control is mentioned for some Garvee units, but this specific deal is called out as having no Wi‑Fi, so buyers wanting remote scheduling or silent mode from an app should verify the exact version first.

  • For someone with mechanical or electrical experience, it can be a manageable DIY job; first-timers with little hands-on experience may struggle. The hardest parts mentioned are drilling the wall correctly, keeping the line-set cover straight without kinking copper, and handling the vacuum/evacuation steps in the right order.

People are acting like it's not worth it because you can't get them serviced or warrantied without a professional install, please do you think we are dumb? The saving alone means that if anything breaks it's by far cheaper to just get a new unit than pay HVAC companies thousands.

The only "hvac tool" i needed was a harbor freight refrigerant pump and it was $120 with the R410 adapters I needed. The Garvee condenser is pre-charged, the only difference between this and MR cool is that the lines are not pre-charged w/aeroquip easy connect fittings. I did the 220V circuit w/ surge suppressor, rated box myself along with the entire remainder of the install for $900 total including the unit itself.
You can go even cheaper and get a free rental of the vacuum pump from autozone, advanced auto, etc.

You don't need professional grade tools. You can buy a Harbor Freight vacuum pump. Better yet, buy a Vevor vacuum pump or one on amazon for $60. There are gauge sets on amazon for cheap as well. Here are your out of pocket expenses.-equipment pad $25 to $80-line set cover $35-vacuum pump $60-gauges $50I didn't include a new 120v circuit, since that can vary based on your needs. Some tools a pro would have are dry nitrogen to check for leaks prior to vacuum, micron gauge, and torque wrench. If you're doing bare minimum, just buy the things I have listed and possibly some Nylog for the flare joints.Connect the lineset and do the install. Pull a vacuum for at least an hour. Crack the valves on the condenser to release some pressure. Check you flare fittings with soapy water. Open both valves fully and start it up.
Yeah I'm a big believer in most of the failures and issues people have with mini splits can be remedied with more thorough install procedures. So even getting a cheap set of gauges and vacuum pump and renting a tank of nitrogen for a month from your local welding supply shop and doing a triple evacuation and 24 hour pressure test, would probably make your unit last 20+ years.

12000 btu from a window unit is MUCH different than from a mini-split. Window units are less efficient because they run on 110, and the window is never going to be sealed as well as it would be if it was closed. Then you have to take it out and store it every winter and deal with that hassle, and even the inverter units are noticably louder than what you'll hear in the room when the split is going.
Plus, it is a heat pump and provides heat. A lot of window units are just ac only.

I'm more curious how difficult it is to install 220v electrical. (yea i'd suggest an electrician)Edited to remove misinformation
I had a friend looking at putting a mini split in his garage and was getting quotes for $5k-$6k. Sent him a similar deal and said you could screw up 5+ times and still be money ahead. He nailed on the first time. Borrowed the vacuum pump from another friend. Had a few hundred in extra supplies like a mount, breaker, extra wire, etc...If the thing quits working in a year or two who cares. buy another

220v just has two 110s. The neutral and ground are the same.

The qire thickness varies by the amps and length of run.

Special equipment would be small refrigerant pump and 410A fitting adapters. Can be bought HF or Amazon around $120. Everything else is drills, hand tools, etc. I HIGHLY recommend using NYLOG refrigerant seal when connecting your refrigeration fittings. Look up on youtube how to use it.
All of the needed tools can be borrowed for free at AutoZone. Same pump for automotive works on HVAC. Some locations even have HVAC pump connections, otherwise harbor freight sells a set for $20

That's why most in the HVAC industry will try to talk you out of / fear monger with this "but you wont have a warranty"

What they aren't mentioning is the labor to repair these units at $100+ / hr + service call cost is not worth it. 2 service calls , 1 to diagnose and 1 to order parts and you are just about at replacement cost.

Manufactures aren't providing labor warranties for the most part, the reputable installers that charge 10-20K per install may provide something but are basically just baking it in to their install cost.

Portable ACs are really inefficient. They've starting making a portable mini split now, which would work better, although it's probably more expensive. You should look into it.
If its your only source of heat, you'll want a cold climate or "Hyper Heat" setup. The standard units don't heat well below 25 F. I have to use a space heater in my apt when it gets really cold which is pretty short lived here thankfully.

eta Sorry quoted the wrong post but I'll leave it at that. Other post said you can use a mini split for heat.

What's a rough estimate of having a professional install this in a house livingroom / bedroom?

I've owned a split unit in the past when I lived in a different place and liked it just fine, but if you don't wanna pay for installation and your gut is telling you you have no business trying to install this yourself, you should probably listen to it. An easier (not necessarily better) alternative is a "saddle" air conditioner - here's an example refurbished 8,000 BTU unit for $260 (I have no opinion of this make or model, it's just an example):
