This GarveeHome 12,000 BTU mini split is a budget heat pump that stands out for strong cooling, quiet operation, and lower power use than window or portable units. Real-world installs describe easy DIY setup for handy owners, with precharged condenser refrigerant, preflared lines, and heating that can hold up well in cold weather. The main drawbacks are the lack of WiFi on this model, the need for vacuuming and careful electrical work, and some concern about shipping damage or early failures. It looks like a solid value if you are comfortable with the install.

Why would you install 220v electrical?
Run a disconnect box to be safe. Just need an open breaker slot.

I don't get how HVAC companies stay in business with deals like this... Let me think, do I want to pay $441, or $4,401?

It depends on several things. How many panels? How big are the panels? Do you have a charge controller? Do you have a battery and a good pure sine power inverter? Not to mention wiring. Or you might be talking about a DC mini split unit, which are more expensive. It might be easier, cheaper, and safer to hire someone
yeah, must be a DC unit...

These are considerably more efficient, both in functionality as well as cost, than window units
the midea window units are like 15 SEER instead of 19, so yeah, a little less efficient. The REAL BAD ones are the single hose "portable"... they end up being more like a 7 or 8.

Mini split start up use way less power, and coil fins are much, much larger so it cools faster

They have those portable mini split in UK & Europe with flexible line set between the two units that Midea only makes. The single hose "portable"ac are so inefficient

My ROVSUN 110v 12000 BTU only needs 380 watts when outside unit is in the shade, drops down to 180 watts when on the target temperature. Most of these mini split are the same components inside. It will draw 900+ if the outside unit been outside too long and has been running the for while, but it is slow ramp up to 900+ not like window unit or central that need surge of amps. This calculated by delta temp between inside and outside units. I have am get away using two 260 watts solar panels, with peak watts of 400 watts input.. but my house is brick, stone and plaster ... not toothpick and cottoncandy

I watched a few youtube videos on installation. I concluded I am not handy enough to go through the entire process - my current best/cheapest option is getting a 2 hose portable AC.

I have a 3 head unit, love it. I did pay an HVAC guy to help pull the lines and do the vacuum. Cost me $600 for his 2 hrs of labor, of which 45 min was waiting for the vacuum. Wish I would have done it myself, but at the same time peace of mind. Buy the copper lines online if you need extra length. I need 75', 25' and 16'.

Overall I recommend this.

In the winter in VA it worked well for my basement, even when temp was 10 degrees outside at the coldest. Anything below that it will struggle. When it was 30 degrees no issues at all.

Dehumidifier capability is poor, so I still run my dedicated unit for that.

But everything else is great.

I bought an 18k unit last year to cool and heat my basement, it's working very well 1 year in with no problems and I basically ran it all winter to heat the basement, it even heated all the way down to around 0 F, though it only started blowing lukewarm air and you have to check if the drainage pan starts filling with ice.

Installation was easy, I had a nearby 220V line to tap into, hire a sparky if you aren't confident. As far as pumping the lines, as others have said a $120 pump is all you need and you can find youtube videos on how to run it, took maybe a couple of hours.

Also high recommend NYLOG blue for the line fittings as others have mentioned.

Having the pump already made it super easy to install another mini split this spring to replace a window AC unit in a bedroom.

The only "hvac tool" i needed was a harbor freight refrigerant pump and it was $120 with the R410 adapters I needed. The Garvee condenser is pre-charged, the only difference between this and MR cool is that the lines are not pre-charged w/aeroquip easy connect fittings. I did the 220V circuit w/ surge suppressor, rated box myself along with the entire remainder of the install for $900 total including the unit itself.
Don't you need to flare the lines? That requires a specific tool. A quality flare tool can run in the $150 range.
A decent pro level vac will usually run around $300. I guess if you can manage with a harbor freight one, great, but if I'm doing multiple installs I'd probably go for something a bit higher end.
I don't see either of the pumps on their website saying it comes with the the gauge and manifold set for R410, which seems to be separate at $200. I've read you can skip the manifold set and just use a vacuum line (still around $100 for a good one) and you'd need a Vacrometer. It's also recommended to get a Schrader valve core removal tool. Those flare nuts should be tightened with a high quality torque wrench. You can manage without it, but it's better to use one. Then having a nitrogen tank with a regulator to purge the lines and test for leaks.
All of this stuff adds up. Can you potentially do it without a lot of this stuff? Maybe, but you're also risking leaks and other issues down the line.

I've spent a lot of time reading up on this stuff and watching videos of pros doing it. I hope your install lasts long term, but I'd rather spend extra on making sure the job is done as precisely as possible.

Do you need any special equipment to install it?
You can purge the lines with this line set flushing kit https://www.homedepot.com/p/Pione.../314537728 instead of a vacuum pump.

Your window unit is a loud machine too though, these you almost can't hear.

I swapped out an supplemental window unit for a mini split in my living room, where we chill and watch TV, and it's been one of the best things I've ever done. Less power draw, nearly silent, can still use my windows as normal, don't have to worry about the bugs finding their way through the gaps next to the window unit, less cost to run, etc. Lots of pros to these vs a window unit, the con is the install job. Probably can't use if you rent too.

so the lines are not pre-charged? would have to hire a pro to fill them then, right?
