PRH UK via Amazon has The Epic of Gilgamesh (Kindle eBook) on sale for $0.99.

Thanks to Deal Hunter phoinix for posting this deal.

Product Info:
  • Print Length:  263 pages
  • The ancient Sumerian poem The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest written stories in existence, translated with an introduction by Andrew George in Penguin Classics.
  • Miraculously preserved on clay tablets dating back as much as four thousand years, the poem of Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, is the world's oldest epic, predating Homer by many centuries. The story tells of Gilgamesh's adventures with the wild man Enkidu, and of his arduous journey to the ends of the earth in quest of the Babylonian Noah and the secret of immortality. Alongside its themes of family, friendship and the duties of kings, The Epic of Gilgamesh is, above all, about mankind's eternal struggle with the fear of death.
  • The Babylonian version has been known for over a century, but linguists are still deciphering new fragments in Akkadian and Sumerian. Andrew George's gripping translation brilliantly combines these into a fluid narrative and will long rank as the definitive English Gilgamesh.

It seems this is the first time this particular translation is on sale.
As I understand this translation is regarded as the most complete (https://www.editoreric.com/greatl...tions.html)

Humans are born, they live, then they die,
this is the order that the gods have decreed.
But until the end comes, enjoy your life,
spend it in happiness, not despair.

Savor your food, make each of your days a delight,
bathe and anoint yourself, wear bright clothes that are sparkling clean,
let music and dancing fill your house,
love the child who holds you by the hand,
and give your wife pleasure in your embrace.
That is the best way for a man to live.

I am more interested in the trials and tribulations of the great merchant Ea Nasir, and his legendary metals.

I assign this book in my History 101 class, and I wish this was the regularly available price! There are other more narrative translations out there but this one gives a good sense of both the story and the poetic structure of the original.

Darn it. I've been crushing my enemies, driving them before me, and hearing lamentations. I've apparently been doing life wrong.

I think "Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" is more germane, and from a more relevant and topical poem if we're talking about the moral of the story.
