The game software is not on the cart. It's a license to download the game, and be able to run it while the cart is inserted. This also means it will no longer work when (not if) Nintendo decides to shut down the Switch 2 online services.

Unless u have it downloaded already. It's crazy that Nintendo will be the only ones with physical media soon. If im buying digital, it will be on pc, not the ps6

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Switch 2 is drawing attention as a low price for a game key card release, with the main appeal being that it can be sold or traded after finishing. The card works as a license to download and play the game while inserted, and it can still be played offline after downloading. The main concerns are the long shipping estimate, the fact that the software is not on the cart, and the risk that access depends on Nintendo services and the key card model. The eShop price is also far lower, around $13 to $14, which makes the resale angle feel thin.

Common Questions (5)

  • The concern is that the card depends on Nintendo's online services for downloading and may stop working if those services are shut down. A counterpoint is that Nintendo has historically kept previously purchased digital games downloadable even after storefront closures.

  • It is a license to download the game, not a cart with the full software on it. The card must be inserted to run the downloaded game, so it behaves more like a physical license than a traditional cartridge.

  • The digital version is listed at $13-$14 on the Nintendo eShop. That makes the Amazon key card price much higher unless you specifically want the physical card for resale or trade.

  • Yes, once the game is downloaded it can be played offline with the card inserted. The card acts as the license, so the download is what enables play without needing the store online.

  • Yes, the key card can be sold or traded after you finish the game. That is the main physical advantage over digital, though the resale value may only narrow the price gap by a few dollars.

But you can sell or trade. Much better than PlayStation in 2028.

I'd like to think that you're safe with bigger publishers like Square Enix and Nintendo, but yeah, it really is a crappy medium. But that's how discs have been for years with PlayStation and Xbox. Frown

doesnt stop game key cards from being a terrible value, i only buy switch 1 physical now, because that at least guarantees the card to be playable offline and when switch cycles out like DS and Wii u stores, the switch 1 cards still work.

I'd argue that this isn't really a good reason at this price. Digital is less than half of this, so you're talking about what, maybe a $5 difference if you sell it after you're done with it? My time is worth a lot more than $5 or so to bother with FB Marketplace

This is only partially true. Nintendo has yet to shut down ANY digital library access that they have had open. Any digital games you have purchased on Wii or DS can still be downloaded today if you own the license. It is not tied to the digital store front closures which we've seen.
