16 zen3 cores at 4ghz for $800!? there ARE reasons (like if you needed quad channel memory / a lot more memory or if you needed ALL the pcie 4, but like... $800 is still pretty steep for that level of compute imo.

One Amazon review mentioned pairing this CPU with a ASUS Pro WS WRX80E-S motherboard. Looking up that motherboard, it has 7 PCIe 4.0 x16 slots. Each one supports bifurcation for up to 4 NVMe drives. I don't know that you can really get 112 (7*16) PCIe lanes at once. But still, the manual for that motherboard calls out the ideal placement for quad GPUs all getting 16 lanes.

This is echoing what you are saying. These CPUs might not provide the best performance per dollar. But they are absolutely in a different league than normal Ryzen CPUs. It's like going from normal automobiles to things like construction equipment. They aren't ideal for most people. But for certain use cases, they enable an entirely different way of working.

per the AMD spec sheet, 5955WX has a total of 128 accessible pcie lanes, 8 directly to the chipset (to run stuff like onboard networking, audio, usb, etc.) and 120 directly accessible to peripherals. and all of those 120 support bifrucation (so they can be split any which way down to 120 1x peripherals if one were so inclined, or 8 full bandwidth 16x pcie4 gpus (such as rtx 4090's which would be a freakin' epic local ai setup or local cloud gaming server or whatever), or whatever makes you happy really. and there are various pcie riser cables and splitters that can get you pretty much any combination you want... you could use this to build a storage server with 30 (yeah, THIRTY) 4tb pcie m.2 drives if you wanted for a sick 120TB with an aggregate sequential read and write bandwidth of roughly 200gb/s - or drop in 7x dual 200gb network cards and build out a wildly capable firefwall or application server with dedicated accelerated nics or any combination of these. does the average person need anywhere close to any of this? ABSOLUTELY NOT. but if you think you could make use of something like that, there aren't all that many options on the market... it's threadripper pro, epyc, or xeon-w (which seems to be getting less and less competitive over time imo).

I'm an IT consultant by trade, currently working for a health research institute, and I've built a couple of threadripper machines (not so much threadripper pro) for situations where researchers have needed vastly enhanced memory bandwidth (for huge bioinformatics stat crunching), and also I built out one or two AI training workstations for kinesiologists wanting to train ai models for stuff like gate analysis, swing analysis, and other purposes that require precise real-time skeletal measurements, etc. and they wanted a box with 4x 2080ti's (which were the latest at the time I built the box).

one of the problems with modern commodity cpus is that they SUUUCK at pcie lanes. you basically have enough to drive a gpu and one or two m.2 ssd's and that's pretty much it. if you populate the second pcie slot on the overwhelming majority of platforms, it takes 8 lanes away from the top pcie slot and allows the second slot to use them (x8/x8), and the third pcie slot is typically shared by the second m.2 slot (the first one goes directly to the cpu), and on boards that have a third m.2 slot, that's typically shared with the chipset lanes for onboard devices (usb, thunderbolt, audio, onboard networking, etc. which can slow things down quite a bit). my biggest wish for next generation cpu platforms is that they double the number of pcie lanes so people can use like a REAL pcie network card (to upgrade to 10g or 100g or 200g networking without taking away 8 lanes from the gpu), or heaven forbid you want to drop in another 2-4 m.2 drives or you want to use a pcie based quad hdmi video capture board which are quite common for video studios doing live-to-tape or some higher end streaming setups.

Regarding performance if you run this with dual channel ram, I had ran my 5950X with power limits essentially removed at this 280W TDP. It gave me just 8% more performance than the true 142W TDP. Even Zen 3 is spec'd with almost no margin before any amount of clock speed increase just explodes power consumption.

This is if you need lanes on lanes on lanes. Incredibly niche.
