Just an FYI...these painted Dutch Ovens are recommended for cooking with liquids and are generally NOT recommended for baking the Sourdough bread as they pose a risk of explosion especially at higher temps/heat.

Thank you for the warning, I'd never heard this one!

It seems to be a bigger problem if someone preheats the dutch oven, then insert the bread for baking, leading to rapid temperature shock for the enamel. You're better off letting the whole thing gently preheat with the bread inside, and never going above 450F. Don't drop in an ice cube when this thing is hot unless you want to ruin your enamel!

I picked up one of these a couple years ago (back when they were Food Network branded) for around this deal's price, and it has done well for me, but I usually cook between 350-450F.

The product says it's safe up to 500F, so I'd indeed step that down to 450F if you want to reduce the risk of shattering. Don't go above any product's stated safety limit.

A lot of people are buying these enamel coated dutch ovens for baking sourdough and there have been a number of incidents where they exploded inside the oven while they are baking as these enamel dutch ovens that have coating inside and outside are supposed to be used with liquids so that the temperature is distributed.....so, for sourdough baking people usually pre-heat them in the oven to higher temps such as 450-500 depending on the oven range...then placing the dough inside and sometimes the dough may still be cold and covering the lid leads to uneven expansion and eventually to explosion. A number of Dutch ovens sold by Martha Stewart and other leading brands have been recalled in the past decade or so.

Bottomline, for sourdough baking they recommend non-painted black cast iron dutch ovens. Hope it makes sense.
